Maya's Pov

"Maya, what's wrong?" Mum asks, flopping down on my bed next to me.

I sigh deeply. "Nothin."

She props her chin on her fists and gives me her puppy dog eyes. "Tell me please?"

I chuckle slightly and roll my eyes. "Fine... I saw my old friend today."

"Who?"

"Skylar. From the adoption agency." I frown, looking down.

"Really? That's great!" She smiles. "Right?"

I nod. "Yes, but she doesn't remember me. And she's really mean."

"What? You always talk about how nice she was to you."

I shrug. "I don't know what happened. She wouldn't even talk to me."

Mum sighs. "Well, that was a very long time ago. Maybe she just forgot that part of her life."

I huff loudly and nod. "Maybe. I just don't know how though. I remember every single detail of that time."

"Everyone's different." She replies, messing up my hair slightly. "She's in your class, yeah?"

I nod.

"Well maybe you can become friends again. I would try being really nice and maybe offering to hang out or do something sometime. Maybe she'll change her mind." She smiles, sitting up and walking out the door. "I made tea, come down and get some if you'd like."

"Okay." I reply. Zoe always gives the best advice. And maybe she's right. Skyler probably just doesn't remember anything from when she was younger. I wish I didn't. Or maybe she just blocked out what happened...

...

I spot Skylar again as I walk through the school doors. She takes one glance at me but does her best to ignore me and just keep talking to her friends. I smile slightly at her and walk past.

If I want to become her friend again, I just gotta stay positive and be nice... I hope.

I watch until she leaves the group of people and walks the halls alone, so I decide to walk with her.

"Hey Sky." I greet with a smile.

She rolls her eyes. "Don't call me that. I said I don't want to be friends. Stop talking to me."

"I need to know something." I confess, still walking with her.

"What?"

"Do you know who Zalfie is?" I ask, biting my lip.

She looks nervous for a second but plays it off with a glare. "No, didn't I say this yesterday?"

I sigh. "Yes, but-"

"I don't know what you want from me but stop. Just stop, okay?" She groans. "Were not friends and we never will be."

I frown. "I just wanted to know if you wanted to film a video with me sometime."

She stops walking as a small light gleams in her eyes but she blinks out if it. "What? No. For what?"

"YouTube."

She turns to me, her face full of sadness. "Why on earth would I film with you? So you can put me online? You probably have like no subscribers so what would be the point?"

"Actually, I have a few." I smile.

"Who, your parents?" She sasses, continuing to walk.

"They're part of my subscribers." I say quickly, walking along with her.

"Dude, I don't want to be in your life, leave me out of it!" She says a little bit too loud.

I stop and she turns to me.

"Leave. Me. Alone!" She yells, turning back with a flick of her hair, and leaving me alone in the halls.

I frown and feel more tears forming, but I don't let them come out. How could she not remember me? And how could she be so rude?

The bell rings, and me and my friends sit down in our regular seats, Skylar and her friends sitting in front of us, laughing a chirping loudly.

Everyone is still like in love with her jist because she's the new kid. Well, they weren't like this when I was the new kid.

I watch Skylar as she laughs and flips her long, curled hair over her shoulder. She's basically a model. The flawless skin, perfect eye makeup and eyebrows, her very straight teeth, I can't find a single flaw in her. Except her personality, it's so fake.

She catches me looking at her, and when her friends aren't paying attention, she shoots me a dirty glare but looks back as soon as one of the other girls says something.

I roll my eyes and turn to my real friends. They all talk, not even noticing that I'm out of the conversation. The teacher walks in and everyone goes silent, waiting for the day to start.

...

"Mum, what am I doing wrong?" I ask.

"I don't know, love. Maybe she just doesn't want to be friends." She shrugs.

"But, we were such good friends before. How could she just block me out of her life?"

She gives me a sad look. "Maya, I really don't know. But I wouldn't give up. If you want something badly, you have to work for it. If you guys became friends before, you can for sure do it again."

"But we were forced to be friends." I groan. "We were the only 12 year olds there."

She giggles and rolls her eyes. "Maya, do whatever you can. And if that isn't enough, then she's obviously not worth it."

I nod. "That's actually really good advice, thanks Mum."

She smiles and kisses me on the forehead gently. "That's what I'm here for!"

We laugh and I start working on my maths as she leaves the room.
