Once we started walking to the school from Jordan's car, Jordan runs up to me. Not Cass nor Eddy. Laney or Izzy, neither. Me. She runs to me. Does this mean she likes me?
Anyways, once she catches up to me, she asks me, "Alex, right?"
"Yea. Jordan, right?" I ask her. I laugh a little and she does, too, as she nods her head yes.
Silence falls between us until she breaks it and asks, "So, what's it like here at South Atlanta High School? Normal? Not normal? What?" I smile at her.
"You'll just have to figure that out for yourself, today. I would say it's not normal but, it may be a completely normal school to you," I say. She nods her head.
"Good answer," she says, looking at me. Her bright blue eyes capturing my lighter blue ones and making my heart flutter a bit. This city girl is making me fall for her.
"So, you said you live with your mom and sister. I don't want to bring up any negative or bad memories or anythin' but, where's your Dad?" I ask her. Once it comes out my mouth, I wish I wouldn't of said it.
"He's still living in Chicago. My parents are divorced and my mother moved with my sister and I and..." I interrupt her.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to say that."
"No, your fine. Anyways, I still talk to him so it's no big deal or anything," she says, as she turns her head away. I watch as a single tear rolls down her cheek and realize everything is not okay.
"Hey, would you like to talk about this in private?" I ask her as I grab her left arm. She turns to face me. I notice her face is all red and more tears roll down her beautiful cheeks. She nods her head yes and I take her hand and walk her to a nearby bench. We sit down.
"I don't really want to be here, no offense, right?" She asks me as she wipes her eyes with a tissue. I say none taken which makes her feel open to tell me anything. I've never felt this protective over someone before now. Ever.
"I really want to be in the city. Hearing the honking of car horns and walking in overly crowded sidewalks with my Starbucks. I love Starbucks."
"We have Starbucks here, too," I say, trying to comfort her. She shakes her head in disagreement.
"Yeah, but, it's quiet here. How can you stand the silence?" She asks. I just stare at her. She looks down at the ground.
"You've probably lived here your whole life. You've probably never been to a city," I look at her, my face disapproving of her statements.
"When have you been to a city, then?"
"I lived in New York City 'til I was nine."
"Then, you understand?" I nod my head. Then, she surprises me by hugging me. I hug her back.
