Lindsey's POV
It's been 5 months. My hair is greasy and matted and I smell like one of the animals that live in these woods. Mackenzie still won't talk. I haven't heard a word out of her since she talked to James, and that was 5 WHOLE MONTHS AGO. I mean, I can't blame her. She's had a rough life. It all started from being bullied by Maddie, and then it went downhill.
Maddie! We left her! And the other girls! Who knows what could have happened to them by now?!
"Kenzie! Mackenzie come here!" I screamed.
I saw her slowly stumbling towards me with no sense of urgency. Her berry stained face expressed no emotion.
"We left Maddie!" I screamed.
"We left the other 3! Do you know what could have happened to them by now?!"
"I don't want to go back there." Kenzie whispered, probably thinking about James.
"Kenz, he saved us. He would have wanted us to go rescue the others and you know it. I said, touching her shoulder.
"Fine," She sighed. Let's go."
We started to walk, me dragging her behind me. We walked and walked and just kept going, trudging through the thick trees and underbrush. After a few hours, we made it to a little clearing that I remembered lead up to the area where the "house" was. Mackenzie stopped and sunk to her feet.
"Come on Mackenzie, we're almost there. Please." I begged, tugging on her weak arm.
She groaned and slowly stood up, still trailing me.
When the house came into view I stopped, chills running down my back remembering my excruciating days here. I wanted to run away and never come back, but I knew I had to keep going. We weren't gonna walk for hours, all for nothing.
"Here goes nothing," I said, my hands sweating, heart surging. I looked in the still smashed window, and slid through into that all too familiar basement chamber. Much to my relief, Mackenzie followed. I didn't have to do any more convincing.
We were trying to be extra quiet when I heard something strange. It sounded like a baby crying! I ran up the wooden steps, splinter shards digging into my feet. I walked to the old bedroom and carefully opened the creaking door. Mackenzie had apparently been too scared to follow me up the stairs, but I was too scared to go alone. So, I waited until I finally heard her soft pitter patter up the stairs.
"Lets go in, do you hear that?" I asked, but then I turned around and saw a couple of big fat tears streaming down her face.
"Lets go." She trembled. And with that I opened the door.
I'm pretty sure my jaw dropped all the way to the floor.
It was Maddie, James, and a baby.
Maddie's baby.
