1942

"Evelyn!" Avery yells, I set aside my book and walk out of my door to my living room. She screamed and jumped onto the counter as I walked into the room.

"What?" I said, as I entered the kitchen to find a snake on the floor. It was little, hardly dangerous. Avery's never been one for amphibians, or any animal that breathes for that matter. "He's just a little guy." I grabbed him in my hands and held his head so he couldn't bite me. "Cmon."

We walk outside and down to the garden as I placed him back into the grass. Avery continued to keep her distance which made me smile. She was always very cautious and aware. I felt like the war was making her anxious. In World War I my father and hers were KIA. After having me, my mother began to drink a lot and committed suicide shortly after the Great Depression was finished.. I was the youngest kid in New York to inherit billions of dollars and a house.

My mother was a starting out movie starlet, and my father had taken part in oil companies before his death. We were instantly rich. Even the Great Depression seemed to be a breeze. Once the markets crashed my mother didn't make it in time to withdrawal and we ended up making more money than ever. As for Avery, she wasn't rich but she wasn't poor. Her father and mine became friends during the war. Our mothers didn't seem to like each other very well. Her mother still works in retail so Avery always is one step ahead in fashion.

"You have to wash your hands! That is so gross!" She said, and I laughed beginning to chase after her. She ran for her life and hurried inside to hide. "Evelyn! I'm serious!"

"Alright fine." I joked and went to wash my hands. My skin was really pale, maybe it was time to go to the beach, I've never really had many friends, mostly just Avery. I'm friends with a ton of older people. But going out and having paparazzi on me, isn't the most fun thing to do. "We should go to the beach."

"Really?" She sounded sarcastic.

"Yeah, why not?"

"You. Evelyn Kingston, want to go to the beach?!"

"Look I know...."

"Yes!" She screams and laughs, "what are you waiting for? Go get your swimsuit." I roll my eyes and do as she says. I pull one out of my closet and pull it on. It was kind of tight, but I hadn't worn it in a while. I looked at myself in the mirror and pulled on a dress for a cover up. My blond hair was rather long and I should probably put it up. I pulled it back into a tight pony tail and wrapped it around until I could pin it into a bun.

I took a deep breath and grabbed the rest of my things to go. We got into my black Ford automobile and took off. "You know, the science expo is coming up. We use to love that as kids." Avery said as she retouched her lipstick. Her red hair was pinned up tightly and she looked flawless. She's always dreamed of being a dancer, and she could do it. She's amazing at it.

"We're not kids anymore."

"You're right, we can drink and there will be navy men." She winked at me and we began to laugh.

Once we parked our car, I got out and men already whistled at us as we got out. I felt uncomfortable. We laid out our towels and stuck an umbrella into the sand. It was perfect out. I missed spending time at the beach with my mother. It was always fun.

Tons of people filled the beach with towels and families. It was sweet. I pulled out my hair and laid back on the sun. A volleyball suddenly rolled over and I sat up to see some guys asking for it back. I picked it up as one began to walk closer.

"Hi, sorry I guess we hit it too far." The man stopped and I felt myself blush a little. He was cute.

"Um. No really it's okay." I handed him back the ball and he stood there with his hands placed on it. I let go and he pulled back but I began to feel hot and it wasn't because of the sun.

"Do you play?" He asks, and turns back to his friends before looking at me.

"I use to. Um...not really..."

"Come play!" He says, and reaches for my hand. I look at Avery who seemed to be more shocked than me. I reached out and placed my fingers in his. He helped me up and we set the game. "So what's your name anyway?"

"Um...it's Evelyn." I smile and he goes to put out his hand.

"Well Evelyn, I'm James Buchanan Barnes." He smiles and I accept his handshake. His eyes met mine and I felt heat rush over my body. I turned away and bit my lip a little. I had always been focused on my schooling. I got a doctorate and wrote a scientific paper on human anatomy and serums on ways to enhance human capabilities, but this man. He.....he made me crazy. It wasn't his insanely hot abs when his shirt came up when he spiked the ball.....A giant smack hits my face and I fall to the ground. I open my eyes to see everyone rushing over to me.

Oh god I was just spiked in the face by a ball. Bucky puts his hand on the side of my face as he looks into my eyes. I can see his lips moving but I can't think straight. Oh my god. He watched it all happen. I begin laughing and put my hands covering my face. "Oh please....don't look at me." I begin laughing and he prys my hands away from my face.

"Let me help you up." He says, and holds my waist as I stand up. I stumble a little but regain my balance again. He doesn't let go though. His hand clutched onto me like he would run away with me in an instant.

"Thank you." I say, but then he continues yelling at his friends instead of hearing my shy response.

"I'm gonna take her to get a drink and sit down, catch up with you later." He walks me to a circle of chairs and let's me sit in the bright blue one. It was hot, and I kind of winced when I sat down but my butt got adjusted to it. He handed me a water and kneeled in front of me. His hand landing on my upper knee and he stared into my eyes. "You gonna be okay?"

"Yes," I smiled and tried to look anywhere but his eyes. "Yes, just a little embarrassed, I suppose." A smile grew on his face and his face got closer to mine. Before a second thought. His lips met mine, I was stunned but relentlessly kissed him back. He pulled away and smiled. Was I really that bad?

"I'm sorry." He stopped and shook his head.

"No, um.......I should get going."

"No I shouldn't have kissed you like that, I just, I couldn't help it." We both took a deep breath and began laughing. "You never did tell me your full name."

"Evelyn, Rey Kingston."
