02 - missing // the first day of disappearance // mother

"Ma'am?"

 "I don't know."

"Don't you at least know where she went?" the officer urged, setting his palms on his table, which was littered with folders and papers. I cried, burying my head deeper in my hands.

"I don't know!" I wailed. "How am I supposed to know when I'm in my office, working for my family?! I wasn't with her! I didn't see her!"

God, I'm such a horrible mother.

The officer sighed, and he slumped on his seat. Through my wavering hands, I peeked a glance at the steel place pinned on his uniform. Officer Dayton.

A moment of silence ensued, but it felt like a long stretch of time to me. "Do you... or rather, perhaps there's a place that she always visits?"

My head snapped up to him, and I removed my hands from my face. He looked at me with his eyebrows raised. "Well...?"

I gulped, and thought for a moment. There is a place that she often goes to. A lump formed in my throat as I utter the destination.

"The ocean."
