Chapter 22
The Beta

We get back home. Toffy, one of the pack members, drove us here. He is one of the werewolves the surround the pack's land, checking if there are intruders or not. From the looks of him, he could pass the looks of a bad boy slash nerd I'm-so-into books guy. He likes to wear round and plain black glasses that gives him the nerdy look. He always reads books, mostly science and shits. At least that's what I learned about him. His eyes are a color of light blue, sparkly, as if he's some sort of a vampire. According to the stories I've heard back in the pack land, he only gets out at night, when he's going to roam around the place. But then again, I'm on a car ride with him, broad daylight. He's no vampire. Pups are scared of him.

Once we reach home, Dave and I both thank Toffy for driving us home. Toffy just gives up a slight nod and drives away. Dave shrugs at me as we look at the direction of the disappearing car. We decide to head inside of the house. As soon as we step into the house, an omelette with lots sauted onions and tomatoes are being cooked, and my stomach grumbles. The scent invades my nostril, making me moan. I think, once I eat, I'm going to have foodgasm.

Mom is wearing her light blue apron, her hair is in a messy bun, one hand attached to her hip as she cooks the omelette, flipping it to the side. Sun shines brightly on her side, making her appear like a teenager entering 20s. When she sees us, she waves at us and smiles.

"How's the project?" Mom asks as she lowers the fire of the stove, turning it into a medium heat as she looks at us over her shoulder.

Looking dumb, Dave just has to ask. "What project?" That earns him a jerk of my elbow on his side and he groans in pain and then lights up. "Oh, the project. It was going good. Almost done, but we have a lot to accomplish."

Ugh. Why is lying to mothers really hard to do? I know I should not lie. It's wrong, but this is the only way to cover up our disappearance yesterday. If I tell the truth, she would give us the look, scold us, tell us we're crazy, and ground us, which I don't want. We just can't go saying, Oh, hi, Mom, by the way, yesterday was so exhausting. A bunch of wolves, or Rogues in my world, have tried to attack us but fortunately, someone came and helped us. Oh I'd like you to meet them soon. And in addition, I have just seen my mate who broke my heart, who rejected me. Cool, right? Plus, the project is just a make-up story so you wouldn't have to suspect our disappearance. We're sorry for that. Really. We don't want to have you worried for us, but we're fine. Really, really, really fine. From inner to outside fine.

Seriously? That's ridiculous.

But I open my mouth anyway.

"Yeah, it's nearly done." I lie, rubbing my sweaty hands on my pants. When mom fully turns around, she notices the white bandage wrapped around my arm and I know that I'm in deep trouble. Her eyes widen, flashing a worried eyes, and she runs over to me, inspecting it. "No, ma. I'm fine. Just a little sprain. I, ah, got it, um..." Think of a fucking lie. Think of a fucking worthy lie.

Thankfully, Dave is not stupid. "We were playing something... um, consisting of running?" I'm taking it back, Dave is stupid. Really stupid. "Yeah, he tripped over a rock and landed arm first on the ground. We took him to a clinic. We didn't call you because we didn't want you to worry, but he's fine now, right brother?"

"Yeah," I say, assuring Mom. She arches a brow at me, looking at me straight in the eyes. Don't be caught, don't be caught, don't be caught. I silently pray and gulp slowly. Mom doesn't let her eyes roam somewhere, and I know if I ever look away, she would know something is up, and she would know I'm lying to her. So I stare back at her, even though it's pretty hard. "Just a little sprain and the nurse said my arm would go back to normal condition within a week or two. I didn't really trip over a rock. Dave pushed me. I fell on the ground. I was being careless."
