The Beginning of a War

"When we first meet," Caper began, "I already knew who you were. My intent was to put a new and young king in a place of power against the opposing force. It was my duty. When the time came, I agreed to the council that I would aid the new king to oppose the oppressors."

"So...we aren't really best friends?" Galvin asked with a hint of hurt.

"What?! no! of course we are! That was just never my intent. I went above and beyond the line of duty because we were friends. The Wolves keep to themselves, all I was to do was get you on the throne, it was pretty easy. From then on, I did everything else of my own free will."

"So we are still friends...?"

"Yes. So, are you interested in my life or should we get going?"

"Continue."

"I am not as young as you think, I-"

"How old are you?"

"Shut up. I was around during many pivotal points in history. Nobody ever noticed me, or so I thought. Galvin, stop looking at me like that. Rumors eventually made their way-"

"So you've got to be at least a few centuries old...So that also means I've been knocking about with a dude as old as my great grandfather...."

"Shut up. Im getting to that."

"But."

"Shut up! shut it! Shuttity up up up. Now, rumors made their way back to me. Apparently I had burned my way into the minds of the people as some sort of good spirit, though what was right in the eyes of some were wrong in the eyes of others. Nevertheless, I was always present in times of danger and catastrophe. I bounded through the ages saving lives and eating smoked pork. Then like everything does, I began to die. Galvin, don't start. I'm fine. So, I began to die. But I Didn't want to. I wasn't done playing hero. If I died, I knew where I would go. My....My spirit would be enslaved to do the biding of the forces of evil. I was called the 'Light in the Darkness' but I would soon be the darkness. If I died, I would have no choice, I was cursed to become a manifestation of evil, like the wraiths, except I would be in eternal torment at the same time. So I began to screw around with dark magic, some way to prolong my life. This was about four centuries ago."

"Wait...so you are over four hundred years old."

"Galvin, let me speak."

"You can use magic?"

"If you don't be quiet I will use it on you."

"sorry."

"Now, something went wrong. The spells effected the entire pack. We disappeared. The Dark King rose in our absence. Then poof we all popped back eight hundred years younger and practically immortal."

"How old are you?"

"Have you been listening at all? I'm 27...technically 834, but...things got weird. The legends about me survived, but few recognize me for who I am. There is a lot more, but I prefer to keep it to myself."

"So when you die..."

"I will be enslaved to do the forces of evil while being internally and eternally tortured. Yes."

"But you can't die."

"No...I said I was practically immortal not entirely immortal. Stab me now and I die."

"You need to keep him safe." It was the first time in the entire conversation that Darien spoke. Galvin had almost forgotten he was there. He thought it all over. Then it clicked. He needed to protect his friend from eternal torment.

"Caper," Galvin addressed, "You need to return to the castle."

"If you think you can keep me alive, you are wrong. everything has to come to an end."

"I can't let you be enslaved to the physical manifestation of evil! You have done so much good! It isn't fair!"

"It is fair. It's nature."

"No, you said you believed in something more! It's not nature! tell me, where do the Wolves go when they die."

"They continue to restore the natural balance of the universe. That is our purpose. Look Galvin, you can't eradicate evil. There is the Good and the Bad, the Bad in the Good and the Good in the Bad. It all fits together in a perfect balance called 'life.' Get rid of one side and you take away a part of life. Most wolves are on neutral ground. They do good and bad. I am the only one who has been so good, not to brag, that I have tipped the scales. Now I need to correct it."

"Just stop being good! do something."

"I couldn't. I need to be good."

"It's my duty to the kingdoms to battle the dark...So someday I will have to fight you?

"Someday, yes. Hopefully not to soon."

"Try to stay alive." Galvin whispered.

"I can't. I will die quite soon. I was told by one who never lies, you heard it to. I will not repeat it but perhaps you will remember. Now, we have a war to plan."

"Indeed we do." Nodded Darien. "I may be old but I have a few centuries of experience under my claws...not as much as Caper, but I will be helpful beyond doubt."

"Sure." Was all Galvin managed to say.
