Luke : age 6

"Hi Karen!" Luke squealed as he sat at the dinner table with Michael and Karen.

She smiled, and handed him a plate of chicken nuggets.

"Now Luke, your mom knows you're here, right?" She asked, but Luke shook his head.

"She was asleep on the couch. I didn't want to wake her up." Luke said, taking a bite.

"Oh, well what if she wakes up and wonders where you are?" Karen asked, but Luke shook his head. "She won't. When mommy falls asleep after she's drank a lot, she doesn't wake up for a very long time." He said, causing a look of concern to wash over Karen's face.

"Oh. Um, Luke? How about if you spend the night tonight?" Karen asked, and Luke looked up, smiling. "I've never spent the night somewhere." Luke said, smiling over at Michael.

"Really?! Can he mama?" Michael asked hopefully.

"Of course." Karen said, smiling at the two.

"I need to feed Chester first. It's his dinner time too." Luke said, and stood up after him and Michael were done.

"Alright. Wait for me though. I'm gonna see if your mom needs anything." Karen said, and followed the boys to the door.

Luke and Michael ran to Luke's front door, and Luke opened it slowly.

"Shh.." He told Michael, as led him up the stairs, occasionally looking back at his mom who was passed out on the couch.

While the boys took care of Chester, Karen stepped into the living room. She saw the bottles of vodka and beer everywhere on the coffee table. She shook her head at the irresponsible woman, realizing that this is no place for a child to live.

She walked back to the stairs when she saw the boys tiptoeing down them. Luke had on a ninja turtles back pack with his hat placed on his head.

They ran out of the door quickly, so she shut the door behind her, and watched as they ran back home.
