Luke : age 8

Luke ran into Michael's room, smiling when he saw he was still asleep.

"Happy Valentine's Day! I love you!" Luke yelled, jumping on top of Michael.

"I love you too, Luke." Michael mumbled. Luke lifted one of Michael's arms, crawling under it.

"You need to get up. I want you to help me make my mommy something." Luke said, and Michael sat up.

Luke hopped off of the bed, and walked to the table that Michael had in his room. He already had construction paper, scissors, and crayons.

He began folding the paper, and cutting half of a heart on the edge. It came out to be a full heart when he unfolded it.

Michael sat down, and began making one of his own.

Luke worked all day on making his mom one, and Karen one.

"Let's go show her!" Michael said, and the two boys got up. They ran down the stairs, and found Michael's mom in the kitchen.

"Happy Valentine's Day!" Luke shouted, and hugged her leg. Michael hugged her waist because he was taller than Luke right now.

The boys handed her the cards, and she opened them both at the same time.

"Oh my goodness. These are beautiful!" She said, and pulled them both in for another hug.

"I've gotta go giv-"

Luke was cut off by the doorbell ringing. He looked over, and saw him mom through the glass door. When Karen opened the door, Luke ran over, hugging his moms leg tightly. "I love you, mama!" He said, and handed her the card.

She didn't open it like Karen did, but she stuck it in her back pocket.

"You're supposed to read it." Luke whispered softly.

"I don't want to read it. You never told me where you were going!" She said, and Luke's eyes filled up with tears.

"I was going to, but there was a man in your room, and I was scared to come in." He said, and wiped his eyes.

"Get home right now, and go to your room!" She spat, but Luke just held onto her leg tighter.

"I'm sorry. I didn't know you were gonna be mad. It's Valentine's Day. You're supposed to tell me you love me." He cried.

"I would tell you, but I'd be lying. Now let's get home!" She said, grabbing Luke by the ear, dragging him home.

Karen felt a tap on her leg, but she couldn't seem to look away from what she just saw.

"Mommy? Is Luke gonna be okay?" Michael asked, so Karen sat down on the stairs. She let Michael sit on her lap, and she wiped the tears from under his eyes.

"I believe Luke is going to be just fine. He will be back tomorrow."
