Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.
- Rabindranath Tagore
The day of my first party finally arrived! I could barely contain my excitement.
I was wearing a long, bright yellow skirt, which went all the way down to my ankles, and a yellow, long-sleeve T-shirt. the color reminded me of the sun and made me feel bright and happy. On top of it, a black and white shirt, which I had not buttoned up, was held together by a thick, black leather belt. My outfit was completed by black ballet flats.
I liked the way the light material of my skirt moved with every step I took and I also felt comfortable with its color: it reminded me of the sun.
Before I left our house, Mum embraced me and wished me a good time, while Dad gave me a ride and I reminded him to pick me up again at eleven pm.
I felt so grown-up all of a sudden! Up until now, all the birthday-parties that I had attended, had always taken place during the day. The parents had organized some entertainment and games for us children, like treasure hunts, and we had usually been picked up at around eight pm.
But this was going to be something entirely different! I was a bit nervous, but mostly just really curious.
When we arrived at Selina's house, I was deeply impressed: situated on top of a hill, it was... huge! Painted all in white, three storeys high and probably almost twice as wide as our own house, it was quite striking, indeed.
Dad rang the doorbell and we were almost immediately greeted and ushered into the hallway by a beaming Selina and her stunning mother. The tall, slim, blond woman had obviously passed on her good looks to her daughter. Dressed in the latest fashion, she immediately started small talk with my dad.
"Hi Mia, welcome!" Selina chirped, almost bouncing up and down in excitement. "Follow me!" She grabbed my hand and started to drag me down the stairs. "Bye Dad!" I called over my shoulder, trying not to stumble, as Selina pulled me along.
"At eleven!" Dad called back.
"Ok, see you then!" I just managed to shout, before he was out of sight.
Selina led me down to the cellar and into a huge room, which was mostly empty. A few big cushions dotted the dark grey carpet and a table with all kind of non-alcoholic drinks and snacks was placed at the wall to my left. On the other side of the room, the sound system, consisting of enormous loudspeakers, a record player and quite an impressive collection of records, had been set up. The light was dimmed; only a few colorful spots and a rotating disco-light illuminated the scene. Supertramp was playing. Not really one of my favorite bands, but they did have some catchy songs, which made you want to dance...
Speaking of dancing...that was not really happening, yet. Actually, it appeared that I had been one of the very first people to arrive. The other five were sitting on the floor or standing at the table, munching on some snacks.
