I've stumbled across something very interesting. I was going through the archive with my three assistants, trying to put their (rather lacking) skills to some kind of use by having them reorganize it with me. Most of the material we sorted through was standard—lab notes from past experiments, readings on core temperatures, a few miscellaneous magazines, etc. However, an out-of-place document quickly caught my eye.

It was an old thesis paper, written by one of my predecessors. The first thing I noticed was its age—the paper was yellowed, and its date placed it pre-war, back when we were all on the surface. Thinking that such a precious historical document didn't have any place in my cluttered archive, I put it aside for later.

That paper might just be the answer to my current staff problems. Whoever wrote it is absolutely brilliant—I've never before seen such comprehensive (albeit theoretical) description of the art of cloning. The genetics, the required magic, the complications behind growing a soul—everything is addressed, and in such a way that I feel he might have been on to something.

If only this monster were alive during the modern age, he may have been able to test his theories. According to the thesis, his only issue was that the technology of the age just wasn't advanced enough. Creating an entirely new being from scrap DNA and soul tissue would take an exuberant amount of energy, something that we monsters simply didn't have before the war... but now, I have the core. And with the core... I may just be able to make this work.

I did say that I wanted to be able to bounce ideas off of myself. Why spend my hours looking fruitlessly for a partner, when I can create one of my own? If I use my own DNA, there is a very high chance that they will inherit my intellect, and if I use the right proportion of magic, I might be able to speed up growth... this definitely merits further investigation.

If I successfully create a monster from samples of my own tissue, this opens up the door to a plethora of other opportunities as well—not just my own selfish desires. Just think, if I can find a way to use the human souls to create more humans, or even some sort of human-monster hybrids... I might just find a way to break the barrier, without any further bloodshed.

Messing with genetics certainly has its risks. So many things could go wrong, both to my health and to that of the newly creating being... but I feel I could not call myself a scientist in good conscious if I simply let this theory go untested. I'll start work on it immediately.
