Souls: Conception

As I keep saying (and I'm sure you're tired of hearing this by now), no one knows for sure how souls are created. Well, that's not entirely true, I suppose—we can see the physical conception process, and we have a general idea of what causes a new soul to develop. I'll outline the gist of the process here, both to refresh my own memory and to inform those of you who are unfamiliar with it. (While I admit that I have no personal experience, I often double as a doctor, and so must understand these processes in their entirety.)

1) When a mommy and daddy monster love each other very much... (Heh heh. I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.) Jokes aside, when two monsters have committed themselves to each other, they may choose to share their souls. They each summon their souls out of their bodies, and allow their partner to physically interact with it.

2) This physical interaction stimulates a sensation of extreme pleasure, even greater than that which a monster gets from sex. (Quick side note: from a few human medical textbooks that I have found in the garbage dump, it seems that humans actually produce offspring via sex. We monsters can also have sex, but while we simply do it for pleasure purposes, this seems to be the only way that humans can create children. I can't imagine what that must be like, to have another organism growing inside of you. That textbook was very interesting—I would highly suggest looking through it.)

3) When the souls have been stimulated enough, their state of matter will change. The male's soul will become more fluid (and in some cases even start dripping, if the monster in question is feeling especially lustful), making the colored outer layer (the trait layer) easily transferable. (I have been told that this trait fluid gets on absolutely everything, and it's not a good idea to have any kind of white cloth nearby—be that carpet or bedding.) The female's soul will soften, but doesn't liquidize in the same way a male's does.

4) When two monsters love each other, their souls are also attracted to each other, as if there is a gravitational pull between the two of them. This can be felt at any time, but the effects are greatly enhanced when a monster is feeling lustful. The souls can phase out of a monster against their will (this is especially seen in males), or cause two mates to be more physically affectionate. When two monsters are sharing souls, this gravitation becomes impossible to restrain. The two souls will eventually shoot towards each other and collide at high speeds.

5) I've never experienced this myself, so I can't do the sensation justice, except to say that from what I've heard... it's unlike anything else you feel in your lifetime. To be completely one with another person, to experience their feelings as your own... they say that there's nothing else like it. Scientifically, this is when the male's trait fluid intermixes with the female's own soul.

6) When they eventually pull apart, residue from the male's soul will be present in the female's soul. This is the point where our sciences dissolve into uncertainty. We don't know what causes the residue to change colors (it can become any color, develop any trait, regardless of the colors of the parents' souls), or how this residue stops being part of the male's soul, and develops into its own person. What we do know, however, is that a new soul develops from this intermixing of souls. It takes approximately 9 months, but a new soul—the child's soul—will develop within the confines of the mother's soul, drawing off of their magic to grow.

7) When the soul reaches its full size, (approximately a quarter the size of their mother's soul), the pressure within the mother's soul will grow too great for it to stay in place. It will be forcibly expelled, and phase out of its mother. The moment it makes contact with the air, its overflowing magic will flare, drawing in physical matter (mostly dust) from the air around it. The new monster's magic is so powerful within its first moments that it will use this dust to form a body for itself.

And there you have it: Gaster's seven steps to conceiving a child. Believe it or not, I've always wanted a son... but I'm afraid the only mate I have is my job. Well, who knows—maybe my job will bear me a child yet.

Author's Note:

First and foremost, thank you for reading! I know that this fanfic is pretty short and info-heavy, but it means a lot to me that you guys are sticking around. (This is my first time writing anything—fanfic or not—in this kind of diary/journal style, so it's still pretty new to me.) You've probably noticed by now that this fanfic is meant primarily to inform you on the mechanics of my AU ZanaTale, so the plot may be a little lacking, and my way of explaining things may come off as confusing. So, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. It takes time to perfect theories like this (can I even call this a theory? I'm not sure.), and your input is more than welcome. Criticism too, as long as you say it nicely, 'kay?
