Chapter 7

An Unhappy Happy Meal

Marlene

It had been a week since I was captured, but it felt like a year. Abyss hadn't returned, which was good. But I was still sitting there in the dull jail cell, day after day after day.

I had spent my time chipping away at a few loose bricks. I worked hard, but it was taking its toll. I was exhausted, and I couldn't sleep. My legs were barely strong enough to claw at the bricks until they fell away. But I kept working, and it paid off. There was a hole in the wall almost big enough for me to climb through.

Abyss returned to my cell one day.

She unlocked the door and said, "Hello Marlene. Here is a little food for you!" She seemed falsely enthusiastic. I immediately suspected something was up.

"I'm going to do a few more painless tests tomorrow." Abyss stated. She drifted out of the room.

I looked at the food Abyss had given me. She had given me what Ethan told me so long ago was a McDonald's Happy Meal, the lowest of human foods. I inspected the Chicken McNuggets and fries in front of me. The food looked pretty repulsive, but I was starving.

I was just about to take a bite when something occurred to me. Why would Abyss give me food? Maybe it was poisoned, I thought. Maybe I would die if I ate the chicken.

I finally decided not to eat the Happy Meal. I would rather starve than fall prey to the Blood Seekers. I would be gone by tomorrow anyway. I would be happy and free and I could eat whenever I wanted. I continued to claw at the bricks.

Just as the final brick was about to crumble, I noticed another wall crack and crumble. Through the newly created hole, I saw the face of another dragon. I looked into his amber eyes and saw his rugged but handsome golden scales and large crest.

Why is he here? I thought. But I realized I knew the answer to my own question. He was here... to rescue me.
