Chapter 9
Evil Plotting
Obsidian
I was rewarded handsomely AND promoted for Marlene's capture. I had never seen Master so happy as when I brought Marlene in.
One day, Master invited me into her office. Her London office is much fancier than her Phoenix one. The walls are painted black with several large windows. There is a flat screen TV mounted on one wall. Master's desk is neat and organized. Her table is not unlike the one we use for meetings, although there are only three chairs. Justin Bieber was blaring from the speakers. Master had set out tea and scones for both of us. We were in England, after all.
"Why hello, Obsidian," Master said. She seemed strangely sad. I wondered why.
"Hello Master. How are you?"
"I'm feeling terrible, Obsidian! Absolutely terrible!"
"Why?" I asked.
"Marlene escaped!!!!!" Master wailed.
This, of course, was a disaster. I just hoped Master wouldn't penalize me for it.
"You got some information out of her, right?" I asked.
"Actually, yes." Master's face lit up and she smiled a glowing smile. "I created a new dart. All you have to do is get it in, and it does the rest. It kills any dragon slowly and painfully."
I was hoping Master wouldn't explain the death process. It always makes me feel guilty. But she did anyways.
"After a dragon is hit with a dart, it is immediately paralyzed. Then its organs slowly begin to shut down. This process is, of course, extremely painful. The more the dragon struggles, the slower and more painful the death is. In other words, getting hit with this is way worse that getting shot."
"That's great Master. However, I have to leave for my doctor's appointment."
"I thought you had one last week."
"Well, I have a cold this week."
I felt bad lying to Master, but it was the only way to escape the conversation. I still heard Justin Bieber as I walked down the hallway, past Marlene's former cell, and out the door. Someday I'll find a nice well-paying, normal job, I thought. Patience was all I needed.
