This Isn't You

It took me a while before I actually went to a patrol again. Well, actually, it took me a week. Surprisingly, Hawkmoth wasn't very active, so I had a little time to relax and settle in.

I kind of felt bad that I left Chat Noir hanging that night. The next day, Adrien seemed to be pretty bummed too. I actually haven't seen him since. Nino texted me the other day, said Adrien told him that his dad Gabriel wasn't letting him out of the house, but also said he thought Adrien was depressed for some unknown reason.

Because of this, I decided to make a decision to give up on Adrien. (At least, for the time being.)

Marinette was obviously interested in him, and it just wouldn't be fair if I took him from her. Although, Tikki did say that she and Adrien weren't really making any progress...

Like the previous night, I had found Chat Noir on the rooftop of some unknown building. It took me some time to figure out which one though. The Paris skyline was dazzling.

"We really do need to start organizing where we should meet up for patrols." I told him. For a second I got kind of worried, perhaps he and Marinette did have an organized system of going about things that I didn't know yet.

But I was reassured when he said, "why bother? When duty calls, we follow. Usually Hawk Moth's villains come looking for us, you know."

        There was a long silence.

"Bugaboo... you seem really different lately to be honest, and I'm really confused."

Uh oh. Maybe he found me out.

"I... I really thought you liked me. And then you suddenly don't show up for a week. What's wrong?" His green eyes pierced through me. I was slightly reassured that he was talking about our romantic endeavors, and not the fact that I'd only been Ladybug for a week.

"Chat. I'm really sorry-" I began.

"Sorry?! Sorry about what. Do you not like me anymore?" Desperately, he went down on his knees.

I felt like I had to tell him the truth at this point. "I'm not really who you think I am. You're not in love with me."

The black cat paused, his chest rising as he inhaled a long breath, and looked up at me. "Listen M'lady. No matter who you are in real life, I love you. I've always loved you. Since the beginning."

At this point I felt so frustrated that I could explode. However much I didn't want to let Chat down, I didn't want to let him down even later when he would find out that  I'm not really the one. "That's the thing Chat! I haven't been me since the beginning!"

Perhaps in the spur of the moment, he didn't really get it, or interpreted it poetically, because he grabbed my arm and pulled me in close.

"Well whoever you are now, I love you." Against the black leather of his chest I sighed. I really did like Chat Noir, but definitely not as much as Adrien, or so I thought at the time. "Ladybug, even if it hasn't been you, or whatever you're talking about, I swear I'll love you from here on."

His words were nice to hear, but I knew it wasn't me who should have heard them. Never in my life had anyone been relatively interested me, now I had a superhero vying for my love. Now, I was a superhero.

Enthused, he twirled a strand of my hair around his finger. "Hey Ladybug, to celebrate the start of the summer, how bout we go out to get a bite to eat. Maybe a croissant or two."

"Yeah because the reporters definitely won't see and try to interview us," I mentioned sarcastically.

"But M'Lady don't you want everyone to see us as a couple?"

"Is that what this is about? So I take it your not actually hungry then?"

I believe that he was alarmed that I was getting a bit cross, because he worriedly began to get a bit clingy. Literally.

"Nononono, there's actually this great bakery nearby, one of my friends is working there over the summer. maybe we can say hi."

Double uh oh. Again, we couldn't go there- he would find me out for sure! I had to avert the situation, and fast.

I stuttered a bit, desperately fumbling to come up with an excuse. "Chat, how about we stay here tonight."

Slowly, Chat Noir's face grew red, blushing from my unexpected proposal. It was after this that I realized I had totally screwed up my wording, and I released my self from his embrace. At this point, my face was as red as his.

"Thats- that's not what I meant!"

He laughed, it was really cute. Kind of reminded me of Adrien's...

"It's okay Ladybug, as long as it's just you and me together, I'm fine with that."

After this we started talking a bit more. The cat said that it was nice to talk like that to me, since usually Hawkmoth kept "us" too busy to actually converse. It was kind of fishy to me, that Hawkmoth hadn't made any moves for the past week. I wondered if the villain had sensed that the ladybug kwami had changed hands.

With his hand on my shoulder I asked him, "Do you think... That maybe Hawkmoth is planning something big? He hasn't really done anything in a while, so it's just that-"

"-Whatever he does, there's nothing that can stop us, or should I say, mothing. God, that was really bad."

"That's true... this whole patrol has been really cheesy. Listen, as much as I like you, it's better that we just... stay friends, okay?"

"Wow, well that came out of the blue," he winced, "so.... is there someone else, is that it?"

Time to tell the truth (finally). "Well, I've only known him for a bit, but yes, there is."

"Would you tell me who?!" This was probably more agonizing for Chat Noir than it was for me, but his stubbornness was making me pretty frustrated at that moment.

        "I can't! We can't! Our identities!"

"Well," Chat said in an affirmative tone, "maybe it's time for the masks to come off."

"Well maybe it's time for you to let go."

His eyes widened, the pace of his breath quickened, and his gaze met mine. Chat Noir's hand left my shoulder. "You've got to be kidding me."

I didn't have anything else to say. I didn't ask to become Ladybug or to deal with him. I just came to have a good time, and right then, it was the farthest from that.

"I'll see you next time someone's akumatized."

Tears were welling up in his bright green eyes, as well as mine.

        "Ladybug, this isn't you."

"I know. I tried to tell you that earlier."

And with a heavy heart, I left.
