Chapter 6

Sky

Because it was Sunday, we flew to the life tree - aka church. When the service was over, Tanix and I flew back to our nest.

"Hey, I'm going to the fields to gather some food for dinner. You wanna come?" Tanix offered.

"No thanks." I replied. "I have to go meet up with a friend." He nodded.

"Don't fly to far! Your wing is still healing." I mentally rolled my eyes.

"Got it!" I jumped out, arms extended as my wings caught the air, and I was yanked up. I laughed at the thrill it gave me. I flew down a few trees, stopping at the familiar window.

"Hey!" Daniel said peeking out at me. I stood on a branch, elbows propped on his sill.

"I wanna know your history." I said, smirking.

"My history? What does that mean?" He said.

"Where are your parents? Do you have any siblings? How'd you get where you are now?" I said. "I wanna know where you come from! I wanna know WHO YOU ARE!" Daniel clapped.

"What an amazing speech!!!" He said, only partially sarcastic. I laughed.

"In the great war..." Daniel started. I remember the great war. Too many Nilloseons died... the humans attacked us. They called it 'World War III' They later erased it from their history because it was too awful. "My father went to battle... he died, we don't know why. My mother was the medicine Abid at the time. Normally, only woman are medicine Nilloseons, but because my mother was with child, and we didn't know if it was a girl or boy, she started to train me. I know everything there is to know about medicine. Mother died in child birth. I was only medicine Abid for 10 years (With help of my uncle), until my sister grew up. I taught her everything, and now she is the Medicine Abid - she has been for three years now. My only relative - My uncle - Died later in a water inccident. I was left alone two years ago, since I wasn't allowed to see my sister - not REALLY." Daniel ran his fingers through his hair. My jaw dropped, tears forming in my eyes. I drew him in as his lower lip trembled, holding him close. I didn't know him very well, but I did know he needed someone.

"What is your history?" He said.

I swallowed hard. Mine wasn't much different from his own.

"When I was only two, my father died in the first human attack. My brother was there, helping me and mom, but he couldn't find dad. We didn't know it at the time, but mom was carrying my little brother. When mom gave birth, we were well into the great war. She decided to go to battle, too. Tanix and I were left to care for little Theus on our own. When mom returned, she was in poor shape. Her leg was sliced open, and half her wing was cut off. We did the best we could to save her, but with our poor strength, we couldn't get help or carry her to the medicine Abid. I watched her die." I paused as I quickly wiped a tear off my face before it fell. "A few months later, Theus was growing up nicely. With help from neighbors, we were fairing well on our own. Just before the war ended, humans raided the Abid camp we were in. They killed nearly EVERYONE." I sobbed "They were too weak when they got to us to kill us. Our neighbors escaped, but we were left to our own. They whipped Tanix, beat me, and stole Theus. When they saw his wings, they threw him into the river. We watched with horror as his limp body bobbed downstream." My whole body shook with terror. "When the humans left, we didn't know where to go. We waited until Tanix could fly without it being painful, and we chose a good spot in the forrest to live. We built our hut. We've stayed there since." I sniffled only a little as I looked to Daniel's speechless face. He disappeared and came out, embracing me. I sobbed to his chest as he carried me inside. We only sat on the floor together, until the pain was a numb ache.

Daniel whipped my cheeks of their tears as I understood what life I lived. What life HE lived. They were hardly different.

A/N

Oh my gosh, I was NOT planning this chapter. I started crying when I wrote Daniel's story - i'm sorry it's depressing. Comment what you thought.
