During our sophomore year, my girlfriend Anne said she wanted to join a sorority so she will be respected and protected. She also tried joining different school organizations to be able to fit in and be recognized. She was seeking attention from everyone and forgot about me.

Anne called me out one day when she saw me walked past where she stood. This was the second time I saw her outside the small shed that served as the meeting place of the members.

"Guess what! They accepted my application!" she said happily while giggling. "I can't wait for the initiation rite! You know, you should have joined as well, it's really cool to be there," she continued, her eyes are shining brightly. Many times I tried to convince her to just be herself and people will love her the way she is, but we always end up fighting.

"I thought you will support me," she said with great disappointment. "I thought you love me." She added.

"I love you, that's why I'm trying to stop you. It will only cause you pain, Anne. You have other talents, you're good at dancing. Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you were born to stand out? I believe in you. I believe you can."

She didn't say a word. She left me standing there, hopeless.

Later that day, on my way home, I saw her standing by the stairway of the administration building. She smiled and ran towards me embracing me tightly.

"I didn't show up to the initiation rites. I went to the University Dance Troupe. I'm already a member," she whispered.

I smiled and kissed her on the forehead. That's my girl, I told myself.
