You are beautiful. You are worth it. You are not useless.

Those are the familiar words Philip would regularly whisper against his wife's ear, spooning her from behind as they wait for sleep to encase them in its warmth. It had become a habit of his.

Philip considered this regular bedtime moment as his duty as a husband to a wife whose childhood was too heartbreaking for her own good. A wife who —up until this day— doesn't believe she is beautiful enough for such a loving husband.

For growing up while being called a dog wasn't the best environment for an eight-year-old child. She could still remember in fifth grade when someone taped a sign in front of her desk that read 'beware of dog'. Kids used to say that she looks like a wrong answer that someone tried to erase, but couldn't quite get the job done, because of a birthmark that takes up a little less than half her face.

From that day on, she believed she wasn't beautiful. That she will never meet someone who would look at her like she was prettiest girl in the whole wide world, despite having a face that was labeled as hideous. That she was never going to be accepted because of the mark that covered half her face.

And yet there he was.

The guy of her unclaimed dreams. The one person who stared beyond her face. The one who gazed at the warmth of her heart as it beats with kindness. The one person who made her feel like the sun was something built for her. The one person who made her believe that she was allowed to fall in love, and that she isn't supposed to be lonely forever.

He became the man who was able to calm her senses with a simple touch of a hand. For her, Philip was her lifeline.

"Youare beautiful. You are worth it. You are not useless." He repeated once more. And all she could do was smile, for she knew that she was never created to tryand fit herself in a world were beauty was too overrated and surreal. She wasborn to create her own definition of beauty, for the only acceptance she everneeded was from herself.
