I groaned and rolled out of bed. I hadn't slept at all last night. After leaving Jack's room, I'd gone downstairs and sat in the kitchen, waiting for and worrying that she'd start screaming again. I'd wanted so badly to stay, but I understood why she hadn't invited me to.

It felt strange, knowing that I'd stayed up all night worrying about her. The only people I'd ever done that for were my family. Seeing the tears streaming down her face though as she thrashed and screamed about her dad and that asshole Jay killed me though.

"Hey" Darren said, coming into the living room, "would you mind filling out the top part of this form and then getting Jack to fill out the rest?"

I shrugged and took the form, not even bothering to ask why he couldn't, "sure."

"What is that?" I asked.

When I had woken up this morning, I had been alone. I had spent what was probably a few hours just sitting there getting lost in my own thoughts. I was so worried about my dad and what was happening to him.

Alex looked up from the sheet of paper he had walked in holding, "medical report for Darren. He'll want me to write down all the details of you having to be stitched back up."

"Oh, right" I nodded.

"Alright" Alex started, checking the sheet, "let's see... today is the 31st so yesterday was the 30th..."

"Wait, today is the 31st?" I asked.

Alex nodded, "yeah, it's been four days since the attack. Why?"

I turned 17 today. Also, that meant school started in five days. I just shrugged.

Hey, do you mind filling out this part of the report for me? Darren takes his medical paperwork way too seriously" Alex shook his head.

I nodded and took the paper.

Name: Jacqueline Mary Silverano

Age: 17

Date of Birth: August 31 1996

Any medical problems in the past: No

I handed the sheet back to Alex and his eyes widened as he skimmed over it, "today is your birthday? Why didn't you say anything?"

I shrugged, "it's not that big of a deal."

"Are you kidding me? It's a pretty big deal" Alex insisted, "I mean, if it's not a big deal, then what is?"

"School starts in five days" I replied.

Alex looked confused, "pardon?"

I rolled my eyes, "school starts in five days. Now that's a big deal."

The confusion still didn't leave his face, "I don't get it. Why is it so important?"

"Um, because I'm going?"

Alex let out a sharp laugh, "ha, yeah right!"

Then, he saw the serious look on my face and his expression darkened.

"Jack, you can't" he frowned, "my brothers and I can't protect you if you're waltzing around a high school."

"Then come with me because I am going. I have never skipped a day of school in my life and I'm not starting now" I said defiantly.
