Jason's POV
When we enter the town, smells of cooking food and the sound of conversation greet us welcomely.
"This is amazing," I say, knowing that it might be an understatement.
"Yeah... it's great," Kat mutters. She glances at the roofs and scans the area around us with such an intensity I can't help but say something.
"What are you looking for?" I question.
"People monitoring us. The coast is clear so far," she replies.
"Why does it matter?"
"I need to talk to you."
"Um. Sure."
Kat tugs me into an empty alley. We're only accompanied by a small, black stray cat. She glances at the starving creature for a moment, her eyes flickering with sadness. But she seems to shake the thought away and look back at me.
"There's no escape," Kat blurts out.
"Uh huh. That's what I've been trying to tell you," I answer dryly.
"We're going to have to kill Quinn."
"We're the ones who invaded her territory, so if we're held here against our will for a little while we might as well accept it. Besides, Quinn isn't so bad. She's just obnoxious."
Kat smirks. "Sorry to break it to you, but I'm not the naive girl you found lost in the woods so long ago. Face it, I'm more educated than you here."
I feel a blush creep on to my cheeks. "Not true. I know whether or not to murder someone, Kat! I mean, this isn't out of self defense!"
"It's my turn to teach you. And trust me, it is self defense."
I get it. Kat knows something that I don't, but she doesn't want to tell me exactly what it is. I can't tell if she's too afraid to or if she has a reason to keep her mouth shut. It might be both.
(IMPORTANT) Author's Note:
Very short chapter, yet a very long wait. Guys, I'm so sorry. I've been really busy the past few weeks. The book is almost to an end. Yes, I agree that it may be a crappy ending but I do plan to write a sequel. No, it will not continue the story but be a second version of it. A better written, more exciting version. So when this book ends don't take it out of your library or reading list because updates will come as I start over the whole thing. (Note that this will take a while). I'm so sorry and I feel like I've let you down. Next time, I'm going to try to write the whole book before publishing.
