Failed Attack

Kat's POV

"So the rats have moved into another home," I infer quietly.

"Yeah, but we've trapped them all together. You know, we could call back home and ask for a bomb. We wouldn't destroy much of the forest and they'd be gone almost immediately," Prosper says.

I smirk. "Good idea. But we're almost there and that'd be a waste of time. We can win this fight without any casualties on our side. I say we attack by ourselves and use the gift that the government has given us."

Murmurs of agreement flicker around the circle. One by one, the soldiers look at me and nod. We decide to attack the following morning.

Alice catches up to me as I walk away. "Wow, Kat! Everyone seems to think you're the leader now."

I smile slightly. "Maybe that's because I am."

"James, Prosper and I are going to wander around the forest a while. Wanna join us?"

"Stay here at camp. That goes for everyone, too. We need as much energy as we can for tomorrow. Eat, rest, and stay hydrated."

"Okay."

The easiest part about ordering everyone around is they're so used to following rules so strictly. They need a leader. Without one, they'd all perish.

It's difficult to sleep that night. The government had made me crave war. I feel antsy to get blood on my hands. The sleepless night doesn't effect me much in the morning. I still feel as ready as ever.

Prosper kisses me on the lips. I kiss back, enduring it even though it gives me no feeling whatsoever.

He yawns. "Still think the bomb would be easier."

"But where's the honor in that?" I counter.

You'd have to be blind to miss where the savages are hiding. A big wall surrounds the place. Of course, not as big and glorious as ours, but you get the idea.

"How should we bring it down?" A soldier asks.

"A few grenades should do. It looks thin. Because of this, I bet there's guards. Look for them and shoot immediately."

Just as I say that, a bullet hits Prosper's shoulder. It doesn't injure him due to our bullet proof vests, but makes him stumble from the impact.

Two guards above us. It takes me two seconds to pin point them before I swiftly shoot them in the head.

We all take a few steps back as we blow up the wall with a grenade. When we run in, the place is of buildings and houses and almost everything we have back at home.

What the hell is this?

We definitely weren't prepared to fight people that are potentially as developed as us.

My eyes are icy and fierce. "Kill everyone in sight."

"Even the children?"

"We were ordered to leave no survivors. What do you think, dumbass?"

But everyone in the streets rushes to their houses. A part of me knows they're following a drill that they've practiced.

"Don't follow them. They're not the savages we're looking for, let's kill what we came to kill first," I say.

We don't get five more steps in when a sickly pink gas starts infiltrating the area.

I laugh. "Stay where you are and advance! Their knock out gas won't effect our bodies."

I was wrong. We're dropping like flies once the gas reaches us. I stumble back, confused. Whatever is in that gas would kill a normal person.

They were trying to kill us...?

But I know that's not true. They're going to ask questions, maybe even torture us. If they had the power to keep prisoners, they would.

I begin to cough as I fall on to my knees. My vision is closing in rapidly. Panic swells in my chest when I see men running towards us with guns and in armor. That's the last image I see before I'm out.

When I open my eyes, I see that my fellow soldiers and I are lined up with our hands and legs tied. We could easily break through rope, but they seemed to know that and tied us in something much stronger.

Who are these people?

A woman along with some body guards stand in front of us. "Ah! So many visitors! You guys weren't as friendly as the last, but oh well!" She says in a cheerful tone. It makes me sick.

She clasps her hands in front of her and smiles. "Now, which one of you is the leader?"

No one rats me out or decides to sacrifice themselves. So I speak up, seeing that everyone would get punished if I didn't.

"You? You're the leader?" The woman says with a laugh. "This delicate little thing?"

My face reddens with rage. "Where are your other visitors? We'll take them and leave."

"Oh, I'm afraid that won't work, sweetie. They're apart of us now."

The guards untie my legs and tell me to stand. I obey since they have a gun positioned to my head. Even I can't survive that.

Did she just call me sweetie? Didn't I just try to kill all of her people?

"What are you going to do with the rest of my soldiers?" I growl.

"That is yet to be determined! Right now, I'd love it if you got washed up and we could have a little chat!"

"Fuck you."

"One of my guards could always help you, if you refuse."

I don't really care if they see me naked. But doing as they say by myself seems a by more dignified than one of them bathing me. So I comply, despite how humiliating it is.

We holt for a moment. "I told you to stay in your quarters until I said it was clear, Jason. But I suppose it is safe now," she says.

"Kat?" The boy standing in the middle of the corridors says.

I roll my eyes. Oh yes, the boy named Jason back in the woods that knew me. I don't know how he knows my name, but he's obviously crazy.

"You know this girl?" The woman asks.

He nods, quickly walking to me. Before he can touch me, I spit in his face. I'm so furious that these people won. This is not how it was supposed to happen.

"Cowards!" I hiss furiously. They restrain me before I can kick Jason in the groin. The guards drag me as Jason watches, confused and hurt.

"I'll fucking kill you all!" I shout, kicking and struggling as much as I can.

A guard grunts. "She's strong for someone her size."

"Yes. Quite fascinating, isn't it?" The woman says.
