Chapter 17 (edited May 2021)

"Luke!" Michael screamed as he ran across the street, trying to get a better look at the boy inside. One of the wires from the telephone pole snapped, the broken wire close to Luke's car.

"Shit," Michael muttered, his bare feet stomping on broken glass as he got closer to Luke's car. Michael pulled on the door handle, grunting as it wouldn't budge. Lights started turning on in the houses around them as Michael pulled harshly at the door handle, staring at Luke's unconscious body that was draped against the steering wheel. Michael cursed loudly, tears running down his cheeks as he pulled his shaking hands away from the door handle. People stared from their porches as Michael ran in a circle around the car, trying to pull open all of the doors, none of them budging. Michael cursed as he pulled his shirt off and wrapped it around his hand. He took a breath before punching the cracked glass on Luke's window.

"I'm so sorry baby," Michael muttered as the glass landed all over Luke. Michael ripped the shirt from his hand and stuck his arms through the window. He looked to the side at the popping wire that was so close to the gas that was leaking from the bottom of Luke's car. Michael wrapped his arms around the blonde and gently slid him out of the window.

"You're okay now baby, I've got you," Michael whispered as he walked away from the car, going as fast as he could with the broken glass in his feet. The popping of the wire got louder as it kept moving closer to the car. Luke was limp in Michaels arms, his head bleeding profusely, his arm bent in the wrong way.

Michael gasped when a terribly loud crash was heard, his body pushed forward by a harsh force. He kept a tight hold on Luke's body as he fell to the ground, Luke landing on top of him. Michael groaned as he looked up, flames rising and crackling from Luke's car. Sirens were heard in the distance, muffle in Michael's ears as he sat up, pressing his fingers against Luke's neck, sighing when he felt a pulse.

"I'm so sorry, baby," he cried, wiping blood away from Luke's soft, pale cheek.

"Sir, you need to back away," A voice said forcefully as Michael kept himself over Luke, protecting him.

"Sir, let us help him," The voice said as Michael felt hands pulling him away from Luke.

Michael stared blankly at the wall in front of him, his hurt foot tapping against the floor. The man had sat impatiently with the paramedic as she picked glass from his feet, then wrapped them up for him. He got to go home to change before storming through the hospital, wreaking havoc until someone told him that Luke would be okay. Only then did he sit down and call Ashton, getting his voicemail. .

"For Luke Hemmings?" A woman's voice announced. Michael shot out of his seat, ignoring the pain in his shoes, his eyes wide with worry.

"Is h-"

"No! Sit your ass back down!" A familiar voice yelled. Michael looked behind himself, sighing heavily when he saw Calum stomping down the hall. Ashton was following, rubbing tiredly at his eyes.

"Where's Luke?" Calum asked the doctor.

"Mr. Hemmings is awake and stable, what are all of your relations with the patient" The doctor asked.

"I'm his best friend, this is his fuck buddy," Calum spat, gesturing to Michael. Michael shook his head, glaring at Calum with pained, reddening eyes.

"I'm a friend," Michael mumbled to the doctor. Calum scoffed, rolling his eyes.

"You're a douchebag. Luke wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for you," Calum yelled. Michael reeled back, his eyebrows drawing down as he looked down at the smaller boy.

"Calum," Ashton quietly warned.

"How the fuck is this my fault?" He asked, chest seizing. Calum ignored Ashton's warning as he stepped closed to Michael.

"If you weren't leading him on he wouldn't have been with you in the first place. You're breaking his fucking heart and you don't even care because you think with your dick and not with your heart, or your head for that matter," he throw his hand up. "He'd be so much better off without you Michael, you have Kina don't you? Stop making him feel worthless," Calum yelled. Michael was left speechless, tears filling his eyes as he stared into Calum's truth spilling eyes. The pale man released a heavy, pained breath as he walked away, towards the exit. Ashton furrowed his eyebrows, looking down at Calum with a conflicted expression.

"What the hell was that?" He asked, suddenly wide awake.

"Ash, come on, you know I'm right. He was fucking with Luke's," Calum said.

"Luke was doing the same to him, Calum," Ashton shook his head, raising his hand when Calum opened his mouth again. "I get it, Luke's your best friend, but Michael is my best friend and it breaks his heart as much as it breaks Luke's when they can't just admit that they like each other. You can't blame this all on Michael when Luke is to blame too. I can't be with you right now. Go make sure your best friend is okay, I have to make sure my best friend is okay, I'll call you,"
Ashton said, kissing Calum's forehead before walking in the direction Michael went. Tears fell from Calum's tired eyes as he turned back to the doctor.

"Can I see him now?" Calum asked. The doctor nodded with a sympathetic expression, guiding Calum to one of the hospital rooms.

Luke was channel surfing, angrily huffing when nothing appealed to him. Calum slowly walked in and sat beside Luke's bed, gently grabbing the blonde's hand.

"How're you feeling?" Calum asked. Luke looked over at the boy with a blank expression.

"My arm is broken in two different places, my head is killing me because of how hard I hit it against the steering wheel, my knee was fractured, I ripped
my favorite stockings, I'm currently not wearing underwear and I'm pretty fucking sure my heart was burned with my car," Luke harshly spoke. Calum nodded, sitting back in his chair with a sigh. Luke laughed back against the pillow and shit his eyes for a second.

"I'm sorry," he said. "Everything hurts and I heard what you all said out there," he mumbled after a few seconds of silence. Calum's eyes widened as he sat up in the chair again.

"Luke, I'm sorry if I was out of line b-"

"It's fine. You're right. I have to stop seeing him. What hurts the most though," Luke turned his head, a tear falling from the corner of his eye, "is that he probably doesn't even care. I really wish that didn't hurt so fucking bad," Luke said, picking at his hospital blanket.

"We should get away for a while," Calum said, huffing, "Ashton's mad at me for yelling at Michael and Michael probably hates me. Let's get out of town, use up our sick days and just be with each other for a week or two. I miss you," Calum spoke quietly. Luke nodded, gently squeezing Calum's hand.

"That sounds really nice Cally. I miss you too."
