IN CHEERLEADING THERE was always a routine, movements, positions, posture and a whole lot of things to follow. There was always something reassuring about knowing which spot to land, how high the throw would be, how many steps to take before I went into position. It wasn't all that surprising to know that every morning there was a routine where I showered first, then Allison, and somehow or the other we'd both be downstairs at the same time, or she'd come down later.
The first Monday after dad came home and that routine shattered. I woke up to find the toilet occupied by Allison. I knocked the door far harder than I normally would, "Allison, I need to get ready now!"
"I've class too."
I groaned. "Well, hurry up!"
If I was more superstitious, I think I would have taken that as a sign, that things were rapidly shifting. But as it stood I wasn't superstitious. I didn't care if I stepped on cracks, or if a black cat crossed my path or even if I saw an upside down cross.
As every day, I was opening the brown cabinet, fingers grabbing my usual breakfast. Sugar was never ideal for a cheerleader but being ideal hasn't ever stopped me before. It's only when I gained a stone or so that I contemplated being healthier.
When I was done with my cereal, standing up ready to dash off did I realise that Allison would be going to university and since mum used dad's car...
There was no one to drop me off at school.
I looked around the kitchen, trying to calm my racing heart, no, this wasn't possible. Allison, despite hogging the toilet earlier came down later than I did. "Allison, you're dropping me off at school right?" I said far too chirpy.
Allison frowned, "No, mum.." Then she looked around the kitchen realising that both our parents had left. "Oh."
Her make-up was done up, hair perfect, she wore a tight green turtle neck and dark skinny jeans; she looked pretty good on the outside, too bad the same can't be said about her expression. "Allison," I pleaded, "I'm sure fifteen minutes won't-"
"You could always ask Kaden for a ride."
"I don't-"
"I'll ask."
She turned away, picking her phone up and walking to the kitchen. I followed her, feeling slightly helpless with a slight pit of dread because I didn't want to run into Joey today. Also, this would be the first time Kaden would ever send me to school. I played with the thread of my white fitted shirt.
She spoke with him for a bit, her expressing looking more cross as the conversation ended.
"Kaden doesn't mind," Allison said. She still didn't look too pleased with the arrangement either. I sensed a lecture coming on, so I picked up my white bag and headed outside.
