I'D NEVER HAD to live without a limb but living without Rekha was like living without a limb, like I'd lost something that was always there. On the first Monday I came back, I spotted Rekha almost effortlessly by her locker, a familiar blonde boy chatting with her. Swallowing my pride. I dashed towards the indian girl.
She tried to move away, but Cassian, God bless him, stopped her from leaving, alarm clouding his features. Which was enough time for me to be by him, glancing at the pretty girl.
"Hey Rekha," I said a smile on my face, "Mind if we talk." I said turning to the blonde.
Cassian's eyes were mildly concerned, flitting over to Rekha and I. Then he let out a breath, glancing back at Rekha before leaving.
Rekha's hands rested on her hips, eyes warily glancing at me. "Well?" Her voice was sharp.
"I'm sorry," The words fell out, "I'm so sorry about us fighting Rekha, I should have told you about Joey and I well, I made a mistake and I hate living like this without you-"
Rekha's lips curled into a grin.
It was enough to reassure me that everything was going to be alright, that little things couldn't tear our great wall of friendship apart. In that minute, I knew that Rekha and I were going to be okay.

EVERYTHING FELL INTO place with Rekha by my side. Tallah still did spend time with me but it was Rekha who was beside me. School felt warmer, with dozens of girls and boys stopping by and telling me they've missed me, or wondering why I'd disappeared.
Grace was one of them, cutting in line beside Rekha and I. "Hey Amber," She said, concern evident on her features, "Are you alright? I tried calling but you didn't answer and Kaden didn't know what's wrong either-"
I cut her off gently as I could, even though my heart tensed at Kadens' name, "I'm fine, really."
"But what happened?" Grace asked, looking genuinely concerned for me. We'd just known each other for not more than two months but Grace was hard not to like. Grace with her large blue eyes, blonde hair and honesty flowing from her. The girl who even Kaden, notorious stupid kind Kaden couldn't ignore. The girl who actually made Kaden want a relationship.
And she didn't even know it.
It felt almost unfair.
"I just was under the weather, nothing tragic or poetic or romantic." It was my turn and I ordered a ham sandwich even though I knew it was going to be flavourless. I took the sandwich paying and as I was about to follow Rekha to Cassian's table. "I'll see you at cheer," I said to Grace following Rekha.
When we were out of Grace's earshot, Rekha whispered to me, "Are you sure you want to sit with them?"
While most of the table were my friends, I knew she was referring to one person in particular. Joey Knight. We'd barely spoken since the time we'd broken up. My palms felt sweaty. I nodded. I wasn't sure, but I didn't want to show it to Rekha.
