Bucky silently stood looking back and forth between you and Clint. He knew that he could trust Clint, but when it came down to him putting your and James' safety in someone else's hands, he had his reasons for concern.
"Will you promise to protect my wife and son no matter the consequences?" Clint yawned.
"Yup."
"Would you sacrifice your life to keep them safe?" Clint thought about it for a few moments.
"If I say no, does that mean I won't get to sleep over?"
"Yes." was Bucky's blunt reply. You tried to hide your giggles.
"Then yes. I will do everything in my power to keep (Y/N) and James safe. Any more questions?" Bucky was getting fed up, so he just shook his head in reply. Clint smiled and walked over to where Nat stood talking to Bruce. Bucky leaned over so that his forehead rested on your shoulder.
"Are you sure that you'll be ok with him in the apartment? What if James starts to think that he is his father? Why would you want to wish that upon our son?" You shook your shoulder, and Bucky lifted his head.
"Believe me, James won't forget you. How could he forget his Buck Buck? Do you really think that he's that forgetful? Geesh, Buck. Have a little faith in your son's mental state." Bucky laughed and wrapped you up in his arms. He leaned into him and took a deep breath. It was going to have to last you a while.
-
Meanwhile James was "talking" to his uncle Steve.
"Can you say shield?" asked Steve.
"Shi-ewd." Steve laughed and tickled James.
"That's pretty close. Are you going to miss your papa while he's gone?" James stood in front of Steve fiddling with the decorations on Steve's uniform. He nodded his head, never moving his eyes from were they stared at Steve's uniform.
"Uh huh." He said quietly.
"Are you going to miss Mr. Bruce?" James looked up for a moment as though trying to remember who Bruce was. He then nodded his head.
"Yeah."
"You going to miss your uncle Steve?" James laughed and looked up at Steve.
"You Uncle Steve!" Steve laughed and engulfed James in a hug.
"That's right. I am, but you didn't answer my question. Are you gonna miss me?"
James nodded his head. "Well, I'm going to miss you too, Buddy. A whole ton."
-
"Are you sure that you remembered everything? Think hard. Even if you forget something small like a toothbrush, it may take you a while to find a new one on the mission." you said while Bucky loaded his luggage onto the Quinjet.
"Doll, if you keep pacing like that, you'll leave a path on the floor, and that would just be another reason for Tony to be upset with us. Do you really want to give him another reason?" You stopped pacing and glared at Bucky.
"Even if he did get another reason to be upset at us, I'll be the only one he can take it out on since you won't be here. I think that Tony has enough of a heart left to not blame a toddler, so the preverbal bullets will all be shot at me, and I won't have my shield or arm to protect myself with. I'll just have to make do with my tiny human shield."
"How do you intend to do that?" asked Steve who had just walked up.
"Oh, I don't know. Probably say something along the lines of, 'I gave birth to this little bundle of joy. Don't hurt either of us, an for good measure, stare into his little eyes and stop being rude to the three of us.' You know, not the classic 'don't hurt us/him!' so often used by women in westerns. I can't stand the way they react."
"I thought you used to love westerns!" said Bucky.
"I did back when they were the only subject of movies, but now the idea just seems dated and boring." Bucky took a step away from you.
"Who are you, and what did you do with my wife?" You rolled your eyes.
"Haha, very funny. But seriously, Bucky, I'm really going to miss you. Make sure that you come home safely and aren't missing any more of the appendages you were born with. Ok?" Bucky engulfed you in a hug, you hugged back as strongly as you could. He just chuckled and kissed your forehead. The two of you then kissed, and as soon as you finished, Bucky had to leave.
Steve, Bruce, and Bucky all walked into the Quinjet and waves to you all. James waved to the three of them by opening and closing his fist quickly. You could tell that it was painting Bucky to have to leave the two of you, but you just kept smiling to try to convince him that you would be able to survive being separated. The smiles really had a double meaning because you were smiling big to avoid large tears from spilling from your eyes. You needed some convincing too.
-
"So is this where I'll be sleeping?" asked Clint, throwing his suitcase down onto the couch.
"It's up to you. There is still a bed in the nursery if you want to sleep in a bed, but you'll be sharing a room with James. In fact, yes, this is where you'll be sleeping. James stays up talking when there is someone sleeping in the nursery with him. Poor Steve had to leave that the hard way. He didn't me get any sleep since James kept babbling all night. That was when he couldn't talk. Just take my word for it. It'll be easier for all of us if you sleep out here." Clint nodded his head.
"Ok.... I was just asking because I wanted to know if that means that I get to control the tv after you and James go to sleep."
"As long as you keep the volume down, you can watch whatever you want." Clint looked very excited. "Thanks again, Clint, for taking time out of your busy Avenger schedule to stay here with me and James. While he may not have shown it, I could tell that Bucky was relieved that I wasn't going to be alone."
"It's the twenty-first century. Why is he so afraid about leaving you alone?"
"Last time that he left, we didn't see each other for 70 years. Neither of us want that to happen again." Clint silently nodded his head.
"So, what's for dinner?"
"What would you like? I guess that I forgot about making dinner! I can make whatever you'd like as long as it's reasonable. That means no ribs or pot roasts or lobster."
"Can you make chicken nuggets?" You looked offended.
"I've never tried!, but I probably could. I'm not going to though. You can't just eat frozen and fast food. I'll make you corn flake crusted chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes. That is a real meal."
"Hey, whatever you say, (Y/N), but chicken nuggets is the food of heroes."
