I walked into the living room to wake Ryn up. It was early and I was fully dressed. She, however, was asleep on the couch again, curled up into a ball.
I guess she was filling in the sleep she had lost over the past few days.
I decided it would be best not to bother her and slipped out the door.
I took the elevator about three floors lower to where Apollo's room was and knocked loudly. Each bang was like an earthquake.
A sleepy looking Apollo with a wrinkled grey T-shirt appeared behind the door and he straighted as soon as he saw me.
"I need you to help me with something." I said.
"Okay I'll just go get dressed and-"
"There's no time for that." I said, impatiently cutting him off. "It's urgent." That was true. The more I think if it, the more serious it gets.
He rubbed his eyes, grabbed his boots and we walked down the huge corridor, traveled up the elevator and back into the big tech room where she scribes usually were. Thankfully, tonight it was empty and we both sat down.
I went into a smartscreen and typed in Ryn's name. Her files came up, considering I spent all day yesterday filling them in.
RYN ELIZABETH ARCHER
AGE: 18
RANK: ALL
PARTNER: UNKNOWN
FAMILY TREE
FAMILY HISTORY
RECORDS
MISSIONSApollo took a long look at her rank and I watched as his expression went from neutral to something beyond words.
"How?"
"I don't know."
Her missions folder was empty of course, but her family tree and family history was full of names.
"Did you call me here just to look at her rank?" He rubbed at his dark bags that were on his face all the time anyway.
"I don't know what to do with her."
"Go on." He motioned.
"She defies the rules if she doesn't have one ranking-- if she doesn't have one barcode." I said.
"So? We can tag her whole body with barcodes. You can't just change who she is. You can't just make her have one power."
"My father would what me to stick to tradition. He would want me--"
"Your father is gone. I don't know of you remember or not, but you don't have someone breathing down your back so it's not like you have to do what he would what you to do."
I didn't look Apollo in the eyes as he got up and said. "You need to choose what would be best for her." And he left the room.
