Her teary smile made my heart melt. Her flamy red hair was in a curtain around her face and I couldn't help but smile back at her. We were so close I could the shape of every faint freckle on her face and the specks of blue in her green eyes.

I randomly felt a tinging pain almost all over my body. Some of these cuts were from me and others were by the other soldiers. Like the one on my back.

That's when I remembered that I was here to spy on my best friend and the people like her.

Someone cleared their throat and Ryn's smile faded and she pulled away from me.

A tall guy with dark raven brown hair walked slowly in front of my bed, crossing his arms.

I recognized him almost immediately. "So you're that guy who kidnapped Ryn from us." My natural sarcasm came back to me in a flood.

"Jeremy." She warned.

Isaac growled at me and he turned to Ryn. "I'll give you five minutes."

Isaac left the room and Ryn jumped onto the bed in front of me, criss-cross applesauce. She reached up to stroke my face. "You have a black eye."

I shrugged.

"What happened to you?" She grabbed my hand and started playing with my fingers.

"Well, I was captured by the King's League and then I witnessed a girl get murdered and-"

I'm being forced to betray you.

"-and yeah, that's that." I shrugged.

She just shook her head and asked the next question. "Serena?"

"Perfectly fine. Probably."

Ryn took a deep breath. "My parents were killed."

Despite my pain, I threw my arms around her and dragged her down onto me. Her head and torso was stuck in my embrace and she couldn't get out. It looked like we were wrestling.

Ryn started laughing loudly and I did too. Her head was still laying on my chest, her legs sprawled out on me. I was like her human pillow.

"To be honest, I think we're all just shitty people living in a shitty world."

She snorted. "Pretty much."

The doors flew back open and Isaac looked up at us, his eyes narrowed. He was staring right at me. Ryn tried to sit up but I held her down, not eating her to leave.

"Jeremy." I quickly let go and she got up, looking Isaac right in the eye.

Isaac violently grabbed her arm and dragged her out of the hospital wing, leaving me alone.

So this was a bit of an interesting chapter. Thanks so much to everyone who's reading, commenting, and voting!
