Rhett's POV:
I was up before Audrey ever was. I had spent an hour memorising her face before she woke up. I looked at all the small freckles under her eyes and across her nose. Her tiny nose piercing. Her black hair with blue tips. And I also noticed the roots of her hair, from where her hair was growing. Except it wasn't growing back black, it was blonde.
That made me laugh at myself. I've always said that blondes aren't my type. But her I am going soft for one. Besides, I couldn't see Audrey as a blonde. It doesn't seem like.... Her. But then again, Audrey is always changing.
I stared at her for a solid hour, just wishing she would realise that I like her, or like me. But you can't always get what you want.
It was easy to pretend like I was asleep. And it made me happy when she ran her fingers along my jawline and chin. It took everything in me not to smile.
I decided to make breakfast for her. I made eggs with bacon and pancakes. My dad wasn't home, thankfully, so we were alone until three. My dad always works out of town, which is why he isn't remarried yet. So I spend most of my days alone at the house. And Audrey doesn't care if she gets in trouble from sneaking out so I guessed why not?
"You cook?" I look beside me where Audrey stands, looking down at the pancakes and eggs. I shrug. "I can," I get some eggs on a fork and hold it up to her. "Here, try this." She looks at me and gives me that look like 'I know what you're doing' before just eating it. She nods and purses her lips. "Yep, it's horrible." We both laugh and I elbow her. "You know it's delicious so shut up."
She laughs and throws her arms around my shoulders, leaning on me. It didn't work too well because I was so much taller than her, but she somehow made it do.
"So where's your dad? You said he was out of town and he seems to be away a lot." I swallow and stare at the food a minute before responding. "Yeah. He is... He's just always working, you know?" I look down at her. She's frowning sadly up at me, like she can see right through my concrete wall. "There's more to it than that, Rhett."
I roll my lip ring around and chew on my lip, cooking the food in silence. I think about my answer before I say it. I didn't want to sound stupid or dumb in front of her.... But I did want to tell her the truth. Somebody should know. And I trust her.
"My mom broke him. A couple years ago she cheated on him and since the divorce he's had a hard time. Be just can't cope. He tries, every night at a new woman's house. He works his ass off during the day and sleeps around at night. By the time he's home he has to get ready for work again..."
It's silent again, and I glance over at Audrey. She's leaning against the counter with her back now, her face looking straight ahead. Her arms are crossed, pulling the top of her shirt down a bit-actually it's my shirt. She was wearing a dress yesterday so this morning I laid some comfortable cloths out for her. She looked super sexy in them. I bite my lip.
"So... Is that why you're like this?" She looked at me, and we locked eyes. I bit my lip and put our food on the plates
"Not exactly... I mean that's part of the reason but that's not the complete reason. It started out with my mom... I knew she was cheating on dad. But I was beaten enough to keep my mouth shut. I was about fifteen then. I had just went through puberty and gotten this completely different face and I looked good. Girls were always wanting me so I just... Starting sleeping around a lot. Of course, I don't do as much now but it used to be really bad. Then my dad found out and everything just went downhill. My mom left and dad just... Couldn't handle it. My family isn't one that I enjoy... But it's all I've got."
By the end of my speech, I'm sitting at the table across from Audrey. She humorously laughs. "Guess we both have fuck up mothers then huh?" She's slowly eating her food, picking at it it seems. I tilt my head a little. "What do you mean?" She lightly smiles and shakes her head, grabbing her food, standing up, and walking to me. She places the plate of food beside mine and sits on my lap. I immediately heat up. She sits sideways, so that she can still look at me and her food. I wrap my arms around her side so she won't fall and pull her closer into my chest. She encircles her arms around my neck and lays her head in the crook of it. Too nervous to speak, I just softly lay my head against hers.
