I kept my eyes closed when I came to. God my head hurt, and I had a sharp pain running down my back and ribs. I must have landed harder than I thought I had, because I hadn't expected to knock myself out. I must have only been out for a few seconds but still.
I could hear someone calling my name. Oh, I forgot about Mark.
"Jack!" He called down, "Jack, you alright buddy?"
I opened my eyes for just a second and closed them again almost instantly; the sun prying its way through my eye lids, making my headache worse. I raised my left arm and placed my hand against my eyes, rubbing small circles against them with the tips of my fingers. Letting out a soft groan I tried to sit up, but regret my decision immediately.
"Jack, you okay?" Mark asked again.
I waved my hand in the air dismissively and tried to sit up again after a short breather.
"Are you okay?" I asked him finally up-right in a sitting position.
"Me? Am I okay? Dude, you just fell like five metres." He called back down.
"Are you okay?" I ask again. I just wanted an answer.
I heard him sigh from the tree before saying, "yeah Jack, I'm fine."
I sighed myself and opened my eyes looking up at him. He was perched on the branch, holding on to the one above to keep his balance. He looked okay, so I was okay.
I carefully got myself to my feet and shook my arms out a little. I couldn't put this off.
"Can you ahh, scotch over to the left a little?" I asked watching him from the ground. He seemed confused before realising that I was going to jump back up.
"Are you sure you're up for that? I mean, you must have hurt yourself."
"Do you see another way?"
He paused and looked down at me, he then sighed and moved over to the left.
I jumped up and down slightly where I was standing and shook my arms again. Then I took off. I ran at the tree and kicked off the trunk, jumping up and backwards repeating the same moves as I did before. I gripped onto the branch and hung there for a moment trying not to cry out in pain, because oh my god this hurt. My arms shook as I tried to lift myself up, but I couldn't. I was about to try again, when I felt Mark's hand wrap around my wrist and I could feel myself being lifted into the air. The pressure on my arms was still causing pain, but this felt better than lifting myself up.
Once Mark had lifted me up and over the branch he kept a hold on my wrist until he saw me look from him to my wrist and then back at him. He looked a little embarrassed by it and quickly let go. I laughed at him and manoeuvred past him to show him the rest of the way.
Once we were safely against the wall of the building, still high in the air in a tree I lift myself, arms and sides still aching from my fall, up and into the window. I plant my feet on the ground inside and wait for Mark to get in. It takes him a little, so I look out to see where he is. Next thing I know, I am lying on the floor, with Mark sprawled out on top of me. He quickly jumps to his feet and extends his hand out towards me. He is laughing now.
"What's so funny?" I ask, genuinely wanting to know.
"The colour of your face." He laughs out.
When he says this, I can feel the colour rushing through my cheeks and over my nose. Oh god. I ignore his hand, and help myself to my feet, clenching my teeth at the pain.
