I sat in Vic's car feeling strange. This felt like some bizarre dream. nothing terribly grand was happening. We just steadily moved through the night. Vic drove silently, not opening his mouth once, but rather keeping his eyes locked on the road, and both hands on the wheel. I brought my sock-covered feet onto the seat so that I could hug my legs and rest my chin on my knees. It was now that I realized just how exhausted I was. I was struggling to keep my eyes open, and the backlights of the cars before us became more blurred with each blink of my eyes.
Soon enough we arrived at what I'm guessing was Vic's house. It was a large, peach colored house with plants and porcelain deer on the lawn that made everything aesthetically pleasing, and like an old couple lived here.
Vic let us in, only giving me a few seconds to look around before he was leading me up the stairs. When we reached the top, he quickly turned to a closet, pulling out a towel and some other shower necessities, minus a razor even through I desperately needed one. My face was past the awkward, prickly stage, and I was now packing a decent teenage-boy mustache. I even had a somewhat, patchy beard going on.
Vic then nodded for me to follow him to the room next to the closet. He opened the door and inside was a marble based restroom. Everything was marble, especially the tile that surrounded the large shower.
"You can take a shower here, and it isn't timed so like, you can take as long as you want." He stated before putting the stuff on the counter.
"Are you trying to say I smell bad?" I half-joked, but I was probably a bit ripe.
"No, not at all. But showers always make me feel better, and...yeah"
I nodded but didn't say anything. Vic's eyes shifted from my face before he walked over to the shower. I followed him like a lost puppy. He opened the barley frosted door and twisted one of the handles on the shower wall. He then turned the other one before placing his hand under the running water, checking the temperature. At the Center you had no say to how hot or cold the water was. You got lucky if the water wasn't ice cold by the time you got to use it, so I was grateful when Vic began explaining how the shower worked, showing me how to change it to what I fancied.
"Seriously, take as long as you want, then meet me in the room directly across hall." He said. I nodded before he floated out of the room, closing the door behind him.
I dropped my bag to the ground before I began undressing. There was a large mirror, brightly lit before me, calling at me to look. I did. I undressed and saw myself completely bare. I was so small. My ribs were so prominent, and my stomach caved in. I had always been sort of thin, but I guess I had especially been neglecting my health recently. I ran my hand through my greasy hair, watching how it bouncily fell down, long enough to just kiss the top of my shoulders. I don't know what had happened to me. I was still me, just a shittier, off-brand version of me.
The shower was unexplainable. When I had first taken a shower at the center, I felt like so much weight was taken off me, now I just felt reborn. Vic's shower was one of those fancy once, with the adjustable showerheads that you could change to like a massage setting and stuff. I didn't touch it though. It was nice to just stand under the hot water, letting it pin at my back.
Once I was all cleaned up, I stepped out of the shower and noticed by the door were new, folded clothing and a toothbrush. Vic must have brought it in while I was in the shower. After I dried myself off with the fluffy, blue towel, I used the toothbrush provided, and changed into the clothes. The clothes were boxers and a T-shirt. That was it. No pants--not that I really mind, especially since the shirt came down to mid-thigh. The boxers were gray, and still had a tag on them that said they cost something stupid like $20. The shirt had no tag and was just plain black. I wonder if it had been used before. I brought the shirt up to my nose, inhaling deeply. It smelled slightly like soap, but mostly like cucumbers. I bet Vic has worn this shirt.
