I woke up to a hand shaking me awake. I looked up to see Theseus standing over me, waking me. His arm had stopped bleeding overnight, but it still looked painful beyond words. I drew my eyebrows together because he looked worried. He beckoned without a word to the door, and I stumbled out of bed to follow. He led me to the deck, and pointed shakily to a piece of land approaching. I caught my breath and whispered,

“What it is?” I asked. The look on his face told me he didn’t really want to know. I realized that nobody had been in their bunks. “Where is everyone?” I quarried curiously. He didn’t answer as he focused on the island with a hard expression on his face. I heard a scuffle somewhere to my right, and I turned. I saw Leon, and a sailor wrestling each other, and Adrienne stood a way back, yelling Leon’s name. The pair of fighters were getting nearer and nearer to the edge of the ship, and when they reached the rail, the Cretans sailor gave a mighty shove, and Leon toppled backward into the ocean with a splash.

“LEON!” Adrienne screamed, and rushed to the rail to peer into the ocean where he had disappeared. We ran to her side to look out at the blue water, searching for him. But there was no face in the water below. Adrienne screamed his name over and over again, but nobody came to the surface. We joined in her calling, but the ship was moving fast, and he was long gone by then. Maya rushed up from who-knows-where and joined in. The sailor who had pushed him overboard snickered and looked smug with himself, and strutted off into the sailor’s quarters. I was so shocked at what had just happened, that I forgot to spit on him as he went past. But Adrienne didn’t. She stuck out her foot out, trying to trip the man, but he jumped nimbly over it. Theseus looked murderous. He swung his fist out at the sailor’s face, and landed a direct hit. The force was so much that he flew backward a foot and landed on his bum. Theseus went over to the dizzied man, who looked suddenly alarmed. He tried to crawl away before Theseus could strike again, but he was too late. Theseus kicked him full force in the stomach, and he keeled over clutching his stomach.

“You coward! Fight back! Don’t ever let me catch you doing anything like that ever again!” he yelled at the sailor, who was crawling away fearfully. I stamped on his hand as hard as I could when he crawled past, which made him yowl. Adrienne aimed a kick at his head.

“OK guys, let’s not kill him now.” I said lazily, but I kicked him anyway. He disappeared behind the door, howling in pain. I almost laughed, but I remembered the grave situation.

“Why did that happen…?” I asked her. She explained how she and Leon had snuck into the food store and taken some, but had been discovered by the sailor, who got in a squabble with Leon which had resulted in the present. Then she continued to scream his name, and looked ready to plunge in after him, but I pulled her back and told her as gently as I could that he was dead. She still screamed, even as we pulled her back into the cabin, and shoved her onto her bunk, and tried to calm her. Two people were dead now. I was patting her hand, telling her it was okay, when I heard a swift motion behind me, and felt something hit my head with a bang. Then I blacked out.

The first thing I thought when I woke up was, ‘What just happened? ‘I panicked, and tried to sit up, but somebody pushed me back down. My blurry vision came into focus, and saw that there were about 20 curious faces all crowded around me, looking worried. I looked around dizzily, and became aware of a dull, aching throbbing in my head where I had been hit.

“Remind me what just happened?” I asked blearily. Nobody answered right away. Theseus just glanced at Maya, and they exchanged looks. “What?” I questioned. Finally Maya spoke, but very carefully.
