That night, I dreamt of Chad Randolph for the very first time. He was clear and evident, right in front of me. I don't know what this was as Harry Denali was the only one I ever dreamt of. Sleep came quickly dozing me deep into the world where everything was good, happy and just the way I wanted.
When I woke up, I switched my cellphone on and to my disbelief I was late for a seminar I had to attend for a journalism course. I dressed up as quickly as I could. Leaving the house in hurry closing the door behind my back.
At the great hall, something kept bothering me, I felt as if I had forgotten, but what! I couldn't remember. Mom and Dad were to attend a doctor's conference at New York so they were out for about a week, while Drake and Jamie had schools and they will be coming back in the evening too. I packed the stuff, during the seminar break as the thing was to start back within an hour, and headed home.
When I returned back home, peacefully parked the car and steadily walked towards the entrance door. The front door was ajar as I pulled out my keys to open the door. Nervously, pushing the door, I slowly made my way inside. My heart was pounding and terrified at what I might find. I, for a second, almost turned and ran back towards the car, but then
mustered up, the courage to face the thought that whoever had done this may still be inside. Grabbing the umbrella from the stand provided me protection I needed in case I wasn't alone.
Walking through the living room, I couldn't believe mu eyes. Furniture turned upside down, keep sacks & nicknack's broken into thousand pieces, some costing hundreds if not thousand dollars, there lay on the floor. The legs of the couch also broken and the China cabinet turned on its side and the glass shattered into million pieces.
Fear, suddenly turned into anger, how could've all this happen? I truly felt violated. Checking the alarm system I realised that I had forgotten to turn it on before leaving and that was what had bothered me all day.
Thinking back, I always though that an alarm system was a waste of money. It was all because mom said that she had to leave us alone at times so we needed protection. Walking through the house, I looked at what was left. All the electronics were gone; my laptop, stereo and television, all gone. The strange thing that they even took the landline handset.
After Calling the Police from my cellphone, I called Mom to tell her that we'd been robbed. Even Chad came over to help me. I told mom that I'd forgotten to set the alarm, after a moment of silence, she said that they're coming back as soon as they could. Fortunately, for me everything valuable was insured, that was my idea, at least I did one smart thing. Minutely observing the police dust for fingertips the officer asked me several questions, to which I thought wouldn't help them in their investigation.
Once, all this was done Chad came and gave me a hug, something I needed badly, the tears started to flow. Harry had always been there for me and I never did anything stupid with him around. Its been more than a year now ever since he left. Now with him gone I'm nothing. Just some stupid, meaningless thing shattered into pieces.
"Excuse me," the officer cleared his throat to draw our attention.
"Miss, there had been a lot of robberies in your neighbourhood lately." He continued.
"Although, it's bad, but you are lucky, for you weren't at home when it all took place. Where others had been and they lost more than just their possessions." This information made a lump build up in my throat and I was terrified.
"Mavis, lets go over to my place until they fix the front door for you and set the alarm system ti automatic." I dutifully obeyed him and walked towards his house. The thought of removing the alarm system which I had determined was waste of money, would come in handy now on.
Sometimes, there are things we take for granted and tell ourselves that we're better of without them, until it's too late. Then, all we can do is regret. And wish that we'd done the right thing, which could have saved a lot of headache.
I learned my lesson, although most of the things could be mine again, but some of them can never be replaced. It almost made me angry as I was the precious most thing for Harry and at his point of view. I had been robbed and even if he has me back he couldn't bring back these emotions, that love which was long gone only because of making a silly, stupid mistake. He told me to move on as his mind would never accept me the way it did before and his heart is unable to forget me. But, at times like these you should listen to what your brain says.
