I woke with a start. My stupid alarm clock was making a dreadful sound. I picked it up and threw it across the room, and the noise stopped. "Kate, what on earth was that?" I heard my mom yell from the kitchen. Shoot. "Uh, nothing!" I yelled back as I scrambled out of bed. I threw on some pants and a t-shirt and ran into the kitchen. I poured myself a bowl of cereal and started eating.

My brother Colby, sat across the table. He looked like he was hiding something from mom and I.
I decided to not give it anymore thought. I put my bowl in the sink and rinsed it out. I turned to go do my hair, but my mom stopped me with an outstretched hand. "Kate, don't you want to wear something more....presentable?" My mom said eyeing me.

I don't know why she cared. "Mom, just because I'm in my senior year, doesn't mean I have to look hot for boys." And with that I left the kitchen. I went into the bathroom and started brushing my teeth. As soon as I rinsed off the brush and put it away, Colby came in.
I could tell he was holding something back. 5 year olds are always hiding something it seems. "Hey Colby." I said brushing my hair.
He didn't say hi back, he just said: "Kate, can I tell you a secret?" He started tugging on my pants leg to get my attention.

I finished doing my hair and knelt down beside him. "Sure, you can tell me anything." He looked around for a minute, then led me into his room. He shut the door and sat down on the floor, and I sat down next to him.
"Sometimes I see someone by the window." He said to me in a whisper. Probably just an imaginary friend, so I decided to ask what his new friend looked like. "What do they look like?" He hesitated a moment, then said: "they have black hair, and they wear white.
"Tell your imaginary friend I said hi, okay Colby?" He got up and whispered in my ear: "he isn't imaginary." And he left the room.

I don't know why, but that simple phrase sent shivers down my spine. I don't know why I was scared, but for some reason I knew he was telling the truth. But maybe he wasn't. Maybe he just want to admit his imaginary friend was fake. I looked out the window and saw the bus.
I bolted out the door and onto the bus, just as the doors closed.

I was still thinking about what Colby said. Then the shocking truth hit me like a rock.
Colby never lies.
