Figures in the fog

A week later, I found another note stuck inside my locker with the same message on it! I swear, I'll kill 'em before Jeff does. I was walking home, when I saw someone standing at the edge of the street. I tried getting a better look, but it was to foggy to see. Then, the silhouette of the person, disappeared from sight.

I rolled my eyes. It's just my imagination. I stepped inside the house, and went into my room. The house was deathly silent. Only because Colby and mom were at a Mommy and Me class. I opened the door, and saw sticky notes plastered all over the wall, with the exact same message! What? What's happening to me?

I took in all of my surroundings, trying to decide if this was all just one messed up dream or not. I pinched myself, jumped around, and even tried banging my head on the wall, but nothing worked. Then I just had to except that none of this was fake.

I just need some air, yeah, that's it. I went outside and let the cool breeze blow across my face. Then I noticed a note stuck to the side of the house.

Please don't be another message... It wasn't. It was from Jeff. "Meet me in the woods at 8:00 tonight."

-Jeff

I put the note in my pocket and as soon as I turned to go inside, I saw the same silhouette of the person, but closer this time. In a panic, I ran inside and locked the door, locked the windows, shut the blinds, and hid in my room. I sat in the closet, not daring to come out. I was clutching Mr. Snuggle Muffins, my old teddy bear. He had stitches coming loose, and an eye about to fall out, but I still love him.

I heard a knock at the door, and I jumped at the sound. "Kate! Let us in!" It was my mom. I got out of the closet, and answered the door. "Hi mom!" I said mustering a smile. "Hi....?" My mom said back uneasily. "Why do you have your old-". My mom began to say, but I cut her off. "Oh, this? Um...I was just finding stuff to get rid of!" I glanced at my teddy bear, and said through telepathy, "it's okay just go with it!"

I returned to my room and started ripping the notes off of the walls. It was two hours later, and I finally picked the last note off of the wall. Yeah, there was a lot of stupid messages! I looked at the time, and saw that it was ten minutes till eight! I scrambled to put my shoes on, brush through my hair, and find my jacket.

I ran for the front door, and my mom stopped me. "Where are you going?"

I couldn't tell her what I was actually doing, that would be stupid. "Friends house!" I said as I ran out the door.

I found the opening in the woods, and went inside. The woods was eerie and frightening this late, and with all of the fog, it made even more terrifying. I found myself shivering, and I rubbed my arms to keep them warm. I heard a twig snap, and I stopped dead in my tracks. What of that strange thing attacks me? What if the person giving me the notes is here?

"Don't worry, it's just me." I heard someone say. I sighed with relief, it was only Jeff. Most people wouldn't be relived to see him, but I am. He took a step toward me, and said, "you're probably wondering why I didn't kill you that night." It was true, I was still puzzling over that fact that he couldn't just end my life. "Well, yeah." I said, leaning against a tree.

"Because you're different Kate." Those words hit me like a sack of flour. How was I different than anyone else he had killed? They were all the same. Poor innocent people. "How am I different?" I asked him suspiciously. "You actually fought for your life. You wouldn't except your death. You fought for what mattered most to you, your little brother." That's when I remembered something. The fight at the bus stop. Jeff was fighting for his little brother too.

"Doesn't anyone else fight against you?" I asked him. "No, as soon as I approach them, they drop to their knees and beg for their life. Or they just accept their death." That's what I most likely would have done, if I wasn't fighting for Colby. "You seem to win over everybody. Even if they don't even know you." I shook my head, denying it. "Face it Kate, your dating Josh."

How does he know about Josh? "Um, you know him?" I asked him.

"We were friends, at least in the sixth grade." He told me. "Then he just...started avoiding me, like I was a gigantic hairy spider or something."

I didn't really know how to respond. So I just said, "I'm not dating Josh."

That's when he took a step closer to me, until our faces were inches apart.

He pulled me closer, and said, "so it's okay if I do this?" He pressed his lips against mine, and I didn't pull away. I just kissed him back.
