My mom found this weird dating website. I told her it was a stupid idea, but she just waved me off. I knew it was a bad idea, because now a man is coming over tonight. I said to make him stay away from here, but she again didn't listen. Why does she think anyone could ever replace dad?

We never seems to listen to me! Sometimes I wonder if she even cares about me anymore.

There was a knock at the door, and I knew it was him. My mom answered the door, wearing the earrings she wore on her wedding day. When I saw them, I wanted to yell every foul name I knew. She didn't seem to even care about dad! I stomped out of the room, leaving them behind.

---

I sat in my room, fuming over what happened. I heard someone go down the hallway to the small office room, and I decided to quietly follow them. It was him. My mom said his name was Brian. He shut the door behind him, but I pressed my ear against the door.

"The money, did you get the money?" I heard a voice say on the other end of a phone. "No, not yet." Brian replied. "Well, you better hurry up and get it! Or our boss will dance on our graves!" "I can't you dimwit! The girl, she knows there's something off about me! I can see it in her eyes! I have to get that stupid teenage girl out of my way before I can get it." My heart sunk to my feet. That stupid teenage girl he was talking about, was me.

Later that night, Brian left the house. I was relieved when the door closed. I grabbed my mom by the shoulders and turned her face towards mine. "Mom, he's not in love with you." She arched her eyebrow. "Honey, he wouldn't have come here if-" "he wants the money!" I yelled. My dad had left us a check before he died. He said we were going to need it when he wasn't around.

"Wh-what do you mean?" She said. Pain in her eyes. "He just likes you for the money." I told her. "I heard it over the phone mom, so don't try and deny it. He also wants me out if the way, and we both know what that means." She rolled her eyes. "Kate, I know you don't like him, but he is the only guy that I actually feel a connection with!" I took my hands off of her shoulders. "Fine! Don't believe me!" I stormed out of the room.

I went to my room and slammed the door. Does she honestly think I would just lie to her to ruin her happiness? Maybe it would be better if I just wasn't here at all.

I was walking home from school, when I heard screams come from my house. My eyes felt like they went to the size of china plates. I dropped my backpack and sprinted for the house. When I opened the door, I saw my mom and Colby tied to chairs. I knew exactly who did this. My mom looked at me as if she knew I hadn't been lying at all. I ran to go untie them, but someone grabbed me by the arm and stopped me.

Brian was looking down at me evilly. "You monster!" I spat at him. He pulled out a revolver and aimed right for my face. He was about to pull the trigger, when a knife zipped past my head and buried itself in his shoulder. He dropped the gun and yelled in pain. I turned my head and saw Jeff running toward Brian.

He pinned Brian to the floor and pulled the knife out of his shoulder. "Now you won't be able to hurt them anymore." Jeff plunged the knife into the mans heart. I looked at Colby and mom. Mom was staring in horror at the red liquid coming from his chest. Colby's eyes were shut tight. Most likely scared of what he'll see if he opens them.

I untied them, but they still didn't move. They just sat there. Eyes wide open. I think my mom now knows that he's not out to get us.
