"So, what math class are you in?" Eliza asked me as we compared schedules.
"Advanced." I said. She sighed.
"Extra help." She replied.
"I'm in the normal one." Peggy added.
"How about English?" Eliza asked.
"Advanced A." I answered.
"Advanced B!" Eliza sounded annoyed.
"The normal one." Peggy scowled.
"American history?"
"Advanced."
"I'm in the normal one." Eliza replied.
"Me too!" Peggy was excited.
I had no classes with either of my sisters. Well, aside from a couple electives. We have a weird school. They put you in classes like math and English based on skill-set. Sometimes, if a class gets too big, like Advanced English, they break it up into A and B. The electives have to be 75% from what we are studying (music, art, or theatre), and then 15% other things. I'm in chorus. I study theatre. That's what I mean.
I felt Eliza tap me on the shoulder. She pointed towards the door. Hercules, Lafayette, and John were talking to someone I didn't recognize. He had brown hair that was pulled back into a ponytail and big, curious brown eyes. After a while, everyone broke off and went their separate ways. He went over towards the stage. I got up.
I walked towards him. He had a pleasant smile on his face. He sat on the stage. I sat next to him. "Hi." I greeted.
"Hey." Silence. "So, what is this school like?"
"Can I see you schedule? It'll make it easier."
"Sure." He handed it to me.
"So, today barely counts, so let's start with tomorrow. Your Thursday schedule starts with math. You are in advanced math. So am I."
"Who else?"
"Well, there's Aaron, I think Hercules is in it, but I'm not sure, oh, and George, and Thomas and James. But they are taking a semester abroad in France. After that, you go to your first elective, history of theatre. That's in the same room as your next class, advanced American history. I'm in that one."
"Cool. Anyone else?"
"Um, George, Aaron, Martha D., maybe John, and then Thomas and James. That is followed by English. You are in advanced B with Eliza, John, Hercules, Maria, and Martha W. Maybe someone else. Not sure." I told him about the entire schedule.
"You seem like someone who's never been satisfied." He said out of the blue when I finished.
"What do you mean?" I didn't know how to respond.
"You're like me. I'm never satisfied."
"Is that right?"
"Never."
"Oh. By the way, my name is Angelica Schuyler."
"Alexander Hamilton."
"You're new here, right?"
"Yeah, I'm from Rhode Island."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I like your jacket." I looked down at my neon pink leather jacket. "Thanks. I like yours, too."
"Thanks."
I thought about Alexander's schedule. He was in all advanced classes. So am I. I think that we are the only two. I had never known anyone in all advanced classes aside from me. He was so smart.
"Angelica?"
"Yeah?"
"One hundred bricks are in an airplane. One fell out. How many were left?"
"Ninety-nine."
"How do you fit an elephant in the fridge?"
He proceeded to tell and elaborate joke about giraffes, the Lion King, and an explorer, which ended with the crash of an overstuffed small plane. The way he told it was hilarious! He had a great sense of humor!
"What's your number?" He asked, seeming nervous. I told him. He gave me his. My heart fluttered.
I thought that maybe, just maybe, we would end up together.
But then I saw Eliza's face.
