"So, how was the first day of school?" Dad asked Peggy, Eliza, and me from across our huge ebony dining room table.
"In class, they read the letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to the principal." I said. I held my hand like a notepad and pretended my hand was a pen. "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal." Eliza and Peggy started laughing hysterically. It was a good Thomas impression. "Well, when I see Thomas Jefferson again, I'm gonna compel him to include women in the sequel!"
"WORK!" Eliza and Peggy shouted together.
"That's my daughter..." Dad said, proud of me. I smiled.
"Seriously, though, Thomas is, like, so annoying!" Peggy complained.
"Yeah, I don't like him. I'm glad you're not friends with him. I think he would be a bad influence on my girls." Peggy nodded her head vigorously. "Plus, he probably smokes."
"Dad, you say that about everyone you don't like!" Eliza exclaimed.
"Oh, and Dad, there's this new Alexander kid at school, and he's all like, Hi, and Eliza's all like, Hi, and then they do all of this, like, small talk, and then, like, he asks her to have lunch with him. He's, like, boarding. And, after that, he's all like..."
"Wait, a boy asked Eliza on a date?" Dad said, anger in his voice.
Oh no... I though. Eliza.
