"I have an announcement to make," Marlene said the moment her feet brushed the ground after a long, grueling practice. Six pairs of eyes flicked to her, confusion written across their faces. She cleared her throat.
"The Game."
Everyone's heads swiveled to Sirius, who was staring blankly at Marlene. He blinked and his mouth dropped open.
"I will hex you, Marlene Anna McKinnon!" His voice was strangled. "I had a good four months until you--" He made a strangled noise that made all of them cringe.
James, who had been watching, nonplussed, stepped between his Beater and Chaser.
"I have no idea what's going on, but I'd rather my Chaser was able to play for this weekend's game," he said lightly. "So whatever this game nonsense is or--"
"Stop saying that!" Sirius choked out. James glanced bemusedly at his best mate and shrugged.
"I can perform an obliviate charm on you, if you like," she added, poking her head around James's broad figure.
"Shut it, McKinnon," James said, but with a touch of amusement. "Everyone, good practice. For some of you, that is." He shot a glance at the seeker, who shuffled her feet and glanced at the ground.
"I..."
"Do better next time, Jones." The team headed up the pitch, chattering quietly as they peeled off arm and knee guards. James held back for a moment, watching as Sirius gravitated towards Marlene. The two put their heads together, whispering something that James strained to make out. He was about to shrug and follow them when both turned to stare at him, before ducking into their respective locker rooms.
What were they talking about?
