"Lovie?"
Lily's voice floated upstairs. The heavy sound of footsteps jolted Marlene into action and she sat up, waiting.
"Lovie?" Lily's orange hair was the first thing Marlene saw, then the rest of her pale, stick-thin figure.
"Sorry to disappoint," Marlene teased. Lily looked over and smiled.
"'Course not. I've just gotten into the unfortunate habit of venting all my concerns to Lovie while she waits for the first opportunity to escape, so..." She settled onto the bed beside Marlene. "Or to an empty classrooms. I really enjoy those, too."
When put side by side as they were, they looked absolutely polar opposite: Marlene with dusky skin and wide, makeup-lined brown eyes and and a head full of inky hair. Lily was chalk-pale, with freckles that spread from her easily-flushed cheeks to her neck to her arms, and her most identifying feature: bright green eyes.
Also, Marlene was tall and broad, and muscular from years of Quidditch, whereas Lily was short in the way a firecracker is short, with skinny arms and legs.
"Hey, you know me." Marlene put a comforting arm around Lily's thin shoulders. "I'm a total problem-fixer. What do you need help with?" She had to bite her tongue to keep from smiling as Lily responded. Step 1 is underway.
"Potter and I have to select one prefect from each house to be in charge of Hogsmeade visits and signed permission forms and all that shi--nonsense, but he does not agree with me. On anything! He's doing it on purpose to rile me!"
Marlene blinked. "When do you have to choose by?"
"Next Friday," she muttered. "I might end up doing it myself and sneaking it to McGonagall on the sly, you know?"
Marlene stared at the wall, thoughts spinning.
"I dunno," she said slowly. "The problem here is that he's being a git and won't cooperate?"
"Yes. He's always a git, though."
"Hmm..."
Perfect.
"I dunno, mate. Give him a list of the best candidates from each house and make him choose? That way, you both make the decision."
Lily lit up. "That's amazing! Perfect! In fact, I'm going to go do that now. Thanks, Marly!"
"Come tell me when you're going to do it!" Marlene called after her retreating form.
"I will!"
Marlene gave it a few seconds...
She's probably gone by now.
And left the dormitory in search of Sirius.
"James!" Marlene called. He looked up and grinned.
"Gonna tell me what you were doing yesterday?" he asked, his grin widening at the scowl on her face. "Knew it!"
"No you do not, and I need to know where Sirius is."
"Oh?" He wiggled his eyebrows at her. She contemplated slapping him.
"Back off, and yes."
"McGonagall's office, I think." Marlene nodded and turned away.
"Thanks," she called as she left.

A/N: Oops, I forgot that it may be another chapter or two after this before the Jily begins *cringes* I'm so sorry! But the plan is being set into motion. I'll be away for another ten days in IRELAND, so if you would be super amazing and VOTE and even better COMMENT, I might spontaneously combust with happiness when I get back. Also, check out my "Christmas in July" oneshots, I've only posted one (Percabeth!) but I'll continue after I visit the land of the leprechauns!
See ya soon, you snickerdoodles-
Ava ^o^
