Marlene nearly collided with Lily on the way back into the Gryffindor Common Room.
"Marly! Have you seen James? I'm about to hand the git his choices for the prefects."
Marlene grinned, elated. "Yes! Here's hoping that he's not as big of a prat as usual."
"Want to tag along?" Lily offered. Marlene nodded enthusiastically.
"I'll come along for the damage control," she offered. Lily smiled, but her eyes were drawn to the boy emerging from the boy's dormitory.
"Potter!" Lily called, seeing his trademark messy hair and glasses. "We need to talk about the prefect choices!"
James ran a hand through his already messy hair, an action that reminded her of Quinn, though with Quinn the action was far less arrogant.
"I knew you wanted to talk with me," he teased as he arrived at the bottom of the steps. Lily groaned.
"Do you just choose the words you like and disregard the rest?" Lily asked. Marlene settled into a nearby armchair, making brief eye contact with the teen who followed James. Sirius and Marlene stared at each other for a second, sharing conspiratorial smiles, before breaking their gaze to watch the drama unfolding.
Lily shoved the parchment at James. "This is a list of the top three prefects for each house. Choose from that selection."
James scanned the parchment, his frown deepening as he read. "Why the bloody hell is Quinn Daniels doing on here?" he demanded. Marlene started at the mention of her boyfriend's name and scowled.
"He's a responsible boy," Lily said, clearly trying to keep calm. "He deserves it."
"He's a rubbish Quidditch player." James glanced at Sirius with an expression that clearly screamed, Why are you making me do this. Sirius gave him a covert thumbs-up and settled into the chair beside Marlene.
"Oi!" Marlene called. "That's my boyfriend!"
Lily was shaking with rage. "Whether he can fly a broomstick the right way up doesn't affect his prefect abilities, you ignorant, stuck up, prat!"
Her hand was floating to her pocket. James took a hasty step back.
"Ah, Evans, you're beautiful when you're angry," he tried in a pained voice.
"Why do you Marauders keep saying that?" Marlene muttered to Sirius, who grinned and shrugged simultaneously.
"Don't you dare! We're talking about prefects, not me!"
"How I wish we were--"
BANG.
James crashed into the wall next to the boy's dormitory staircase, staring down a wand prodding into his nose. Lily Evans had her pale arm out straight before her, clutching her wand tight in a half lunge position. Her face was flushed with fury, making her green eyes stand out. Her hair floated about her face and tumbled down her shoulders.
James thought she was beautiful, even as she screamed obscenities that caused older students to clap their hands over the younger children's ears and hurry out the room.
"You moron!" Lily shouted, slowly running out of breath. "You are so incompetent that you can't choose four prefects out of twelve total without making a total fool out of yourself over one of them! You--you--you--"
She was too furious for words, and simply glared at him with an intensity in her eyes that seemed to pin James to the wall, even had she not been threatening him with her wand.
"What's all this noise?"
Professor McGonagall was stalking across the Common Room toward the two Heads.
"Miss Evans! What are you doing to Mr. Potter? Let him go!" Lily dropped her wand arm, glaring mutinously at Potter. He grinned at McGonagall weakly.
"Explain at once," McGonagall snapped, setting her hands on her hips.
"She was attacking me--"
"He wasn't doing his job as Head Boy!"
"She attacked me!"
"He was ridiculing a certain duty we have as Heads! "
McGongall's head swung from side to side, watching the two Seventh Years hurling accusations. Unconsciously, a crowd began to form a semicircle around the offenders. Finally, the professor had enough.
"Everyone out," McGonagall ordered, and the students scurried out of the way of her towering rage. When all were gone but Sirius and Marlene, innocently holding a conversation by the fire, McGonagall sighed.
"So I am to understand that you had a spat over Head duties?"
"He won't cooperate with me," Lily spat.
"She attacked me!"
"Quiet," McGonagall ordered. She surveyed them for a moment. A log in the fire snapped, causing all concerned to jump. Marlene, focused on the drama as she was, squeaked.
"McKinnon, Black, I'll ask that you return to your dormitories as well.
Marlene nodded and collected her homework. As she left, Lily caught her eye. Marlene gave her a sympathetic nod and mouthed find me before climbing up to her bed.
