Real Not Real

"I don't know if I can do this..."
James looked at Lily, who was biting her lip and staring at the floor.
"Do what?" he asked.
"What do you think, Potter?" she asked, sarcasm not quite hiding the nervousness in her voice.
"It'll be fine, Lily," he responded, looking her dead in the eye. She nodded several times as if trying to affirm herself.
"Yes. Yes, I can do this. Why are we doing this again?"
James laughed. "C'mon Lily," he said, grabbing her hand. She looked at their fingers, entertwined, and nodded.
"Real, on," she muttered. He looked at her. "What was that?"
"Nothing. C'mon... James."
He grinned.
"That's more like it."
The two stepped through the double doors, and it suddenly, horribly, struck Lily how conspicuous they were.
They were way late, and everyone was watching them.
Dead silence in the room. Everybody and their uncle noticed their hands. Lily's face was burning up. She pinpointed Marlene and glared at her. The brunette busied herself in her food. Lovie looked confused.
The silence in the room was unbearable, until Sirius wolf-whistled.
"I'm going to kill him," Lily muttered.
"Don't kill him! He's my best mate!" James responded in an equally low voice.
"I'm gonna."
"Don't you dare."
"James Potter let go of my han...James!"
He turned toward Lily, took both her hands, and kissed her.
