"They bloody hate each other." Marlene McKinnon tossed her quill across the library and covered her face with her hands.
"Don't be pessimistic, we'll figure it out." Sirius Black grinned at the witch sitting across from him. She rolled her eyes and threw up her hands simultaneously.
"We? We? I've been brainstorming all afternoon while you've been releasing and catching a bloody snitch that you stole from James Potter and saying 'We'll figure it out'. That's not very helpful, you know."
"You're beautiful when you're angry, McKinnon," he informed her. Her eyebrows shot up.
"I have a boyfriend, so piss off."
"Relax, Marlene," Sirius said with an easy grin. He shoved his hands in his pockets and stood. "I actually do have a plan, but I've got to go..." He glanced for a half-second at the tiny tattoo on his wrist that displayed a full moon. Simple charm, really, to get it to match the moon's cycles.
"What," Marlene asked, tipping the chair back, "you have another prank planned with the very bloke in question?"
"Mmm, no, but..." Prank.
The front legs of her chair came down with a thump as the librarian shot a warning glare at her. "Sorry Sir Lance!"
"Merlin, I've got an idea!"
"I thought you had a plan?" Marlene smirked at him. He mock-glared at her.
"Prank," he enunciated.
"Okay...? I assume that you have a little time before hurrying off to get cozy with your mates to explain beyond that one word."
"Mmm, no. I like to be mysterious. Besides, I like it when my Quidditch captain is happy."
Marlene blinked, bewildered. "Oh...kay? That was...random."
"James isn't happy when his second-best chaser is gone from a practice because she was too busy with her her boyfriend to bother showing up." Sirius put a little too much emphasis on busy and gave her a cheeky grin.
"That's not... That was once, you prat! And who's second-best?"
"So maybe, if I see you at the next practice, I'll share with you this brilliant plan of mine. And we get ourselves a Happy Quidditch Captain in return."
"Of course, the great Sirius Black doesn't need any extra time to refine said idea, and waiting until making sure his partner turns up to Quidditch practice isn't at all for that purpose," Marlene said dryly.
Sirius was undeterred. "Got it in one. See ya, Inky."
"What is that supposed to..." Marlene's eyes flickered down to the short black curls brushing her shoulder and scowled. "Black!" She hauled the bag up on her shoulder and rushed to the doorway. "I'm not a second-best chaser, either!" she called after his retreating black mane.
