Marlene stopped talking. "Did you hear that?"
Sirius stared at the door. "What was that?"
Voices were audible just outside the door.
"Looks like you wrecked that room pretty hard, for a twig."
James, Sirius mouthed at Marlene. Marlene nodded.
"I was a little angry... I am not a twig!"
Marlene's eyes widened. Lily!
A low chuckle. "The understatement of the century on both matters. Let's talk it out in this one, okay?" The doorknob rattled. Marlene sent Sirius a panicked look and they sprang up and sprinted across the room, diving under the teacher's desk just as the door opened.
Two pairs of footsteps entered, desks squeaked and settled. Marlene, pressed up against the inside of the teachers desk, craned her neck to look at Sirius.
"So," James said. "I guess I owe you an apology."
Marlene imagined Lily's expression. Shocked? Annoyed? Confused?
"What?"
All three, then.
"I said, I guess I owe you an apology."
A long pause--Marlene expected Lily was analyzing the sentiment. Finally, having found no obvious flaws with it, she asked, "You? James Potter? Apologizing?"
"Do you want me to apologize?" James asked, sounding confused.
"I mean... Yeah, but... James Potter doesn't apologize." She sounded bewildered. This was a fact of the universe; James Potter doesn't apologize.
Another long pause.
"Well, I'm James Potter, and I am."
"Oh."
"Shall I continue? I mean, with all this opposition, maybe I should just leave it at that."
"N-no, no, I mean, yeah, go ahead and continue."
Pause.
"Lily Evans, are you blushing?"
"Shut up and get on with it!"
"I'm sorry for making a big deal out of the prefects thing. It was sort of a--a dare."
Sirius's eyes went wide. "Shit," he breathed.
"A dare," Lily repeated skeptically. Marlene stared daggers into the wood of the desk. If James says anything...
An awkward chuckle from James. "Sort-of."
"I mean, you've never had trouble antagonizing people for no reason in the past... How do I know this isn't an elaborate plan to make me actually forgive you, God forbid, so that you can ask me out with me guard down?" Lily asked.
Marlene swore she felt James's eyes widening with shock and hurt.
"I'm past that, Evans, I'm hurt that you should even suggest such a thing?" With the exaggerated hurt in his voice, she pictured him clutching at his heart and staring at her with mournfully wide eyes.
"You're not exactly above it..."
"I'm a new man, Evans, and this new man would like very much for you to let me apologize."
"Go on, then, new man Potter."
When he spoke again, his voice had lost the awkward, uncertain tones of before. "I am sincerely, deeply, painfully, sorry for all the wrongs I have done unto you in years gone by."
Marlene stared at Sirius in horror. What was Lily going to...
"Nice try." There was a laugh in her voice. "Apology somewhat accepted."
"Somewhat?" James exclaimed. "What's a guy gotta do?"
"I know just the thing."

A/N: I'm soooo sorry guys! *covers face in shame* I'm late on an update!
However, I'm about to start school, and I can't update every other day. Sooo, here's my deal: when RNR hits 30 votes, I'll give you the next update?
Haha, I'm a totally horrible person. But hey, it's already at 27 votes, it won't...be...too? hard?
I'm terrible. But anyway, please let me know what you thought of the chapter and what you think Lily's gonna do!
I love everyone who has voted and read my story, and I'm totally a sucker for votes, so that's why I'm forcing you lot into this.
Don't hate me!
Peace,
Ava, your friendly purple dragon.
