Five minutes of silence was too much, James decided, as they walked side-by-side down a corridor.
Lily's eyes were fixed on the floor, and James supposed that it was up to him to break it.
"What's your favorite Quidditch team?" he asked, with an awkward smile. She glanced up and burst into giggles.
"Wh... Hey, wait, why are you laughing?"
She fought for breath.
"It's just," she explained, "we're so used to arguing, we have literally no other way to interact."
He grinned, albeit awkwardly. "We need relationship counseling."
At this she doubled over with silent laughter. "God. It's not even that funny. This is so... so surreal."
"Surreal, but not real," he agreed.
"What is that even supposed to mean?" she asked, raising her eyebrows.
"Look at me, everyone." He pranced ahead a few steps. "I am James Potter and I am finally dating the lovely Lily Evans." He cast a glance over his shoulder to see if she was smiling. She was, while shaking her head.
"Shut up and get back here, Potter."
He pouted. "I prefer Boo."
"This is one whacked up relationship."
"As long as we keep it real for the kids," he agreed.
"And not real for us," she reminded him.
"I'm getting a headache," he muttered. "Real, not real. Real, not real."
She whacked his arm. Bloody hell, she was strong for a twig of a girl. "It's not that difficult!"
Smiling, he opened his mouth to retort when he heard something. "Someone's coming!"
Lily looked around reflexively, but of course, no one was there. "What?"
A peal of high pitched laughter reached their ears.
"Run!" she suggested, at the same time James hissed, "Kiss me!"
They both blinked at each other. "What?" They spoke in unison.
The voices drew nearer. James guessed a group of fifth year girls. (Did they ever go anywhere alone?)
"Eff it," Lily hissed and as the girls rounded to corner, Lily rose on tiptoe and planted a kiss on James's cheek. The girls stopped, startled. James put an arm around Lily and winked.
They ran off, giggling madly. As soon as they disappeared around the corner, Lily shoved James away.
"You owe me, Potter," she accused, kissing the back of her hand... over and over and over.
"What the bloody hell are you doing?" James asked, confused.
"Trying to pretend that never happened," she replied between kisses.
"I wish I were your hand."
"Sod off, Potter."
