A/N: bit of a timeskip, but rest assured, all that happened was some James being confused and sad and Lily being v angry.
"Evans and Snape!"
Lily froze up, keeping her eyes on her desk. If she looked up, she knew Slughorn would be standing with a smug grin, probably expecting great results from his two best students.
"Sorry sir," Sev called out, voice smooth and oily. "I won't work with her."
She imagined herself curling up, closing herself off from the dungeons.
"Sorry?" Slughorn asked, sounding confused. Lily closed her eyes and wished she could sink into the floor.
"I said," Snape repeated, "I won't work with her."
"I... I don't understand, Severus," Slughorn stammered. Somewhere, far away, a door slammed. Lily looked up. James was resting against the door, hands in his robe pockets.
"I wouldn't mind partenering with Lily, sir," James said with a smug grin. Lily scooped up her things and stood up, chair screeching loudly.
"Yes!" she exclaimed, and then realized everyone was looking at her oddly. She might've blushed. "Yes, I'll partner with him."
James sauntered over to a desk and she hurried past Snape, not looking. Someone--Sirius, probably--muttered, "Excited, aren't we?"
"So are you still mad at me?" James asked, and then did she realize what she'd down.
"Yes," she scowled, "so bugger off." He made a moue of disappointment.
"But I saved you from Snape!" he protested.

"It says to add in the manticore horn, then stir six clockwise," Lily said, looking up from her parchment. She frowned at James. "What the bloody hell are you doing?"
He grinned at her. "Experimenting," he said, pushing a pile of brightly colored dust into his hand and preparing to dump it into the potion.
"No!" Lily caught his hand. "You're going to cost us a grade!"
James tilted his hand over the cauldron. Lily grabbed the metal ladle and tried futiley to deflect the dust. It scattered over the near-perfect potion.
"Nothing happened," Lily said, relieved. She blew a lock of hair out of her face. "Thank Merlin."
The potion exploded.
