Me and Zayjay left the house without another word. I felt a very unsettling vibe about her now. It was just the way she looked at me was different now. It was almost as if she were trying to intimidate me. If that was the case, then it was working.
Whenever she did stare at me, I would glance sideways and look away. I had to do this often.
We continued walking until we heard a "MARCO!"
It sounded like Oliver.
"POLO!"
Me and Zayjay began running in the direction of the sound."MARCO!"
"POLO!"
"MARCO!"
"POLO!"
"MARC-"
We froze.
His voice got cut off by something. It was silent.
I noticed that Zayjay was staring intensely at the ground. She seemed angry or worried about an unknown something. She clutched the knife in her hand and her other hand formed a fist. Her attention never left the cracked road."MARCO! MARCO! MARCO!"
Suddenly, Oliver's voice was frantic.
Zayjay's head popped up and she sprinted towards Oliver's calls. I followed behind. We ended up going down a very devastated looking road. Buildings were crumbled and there was glass and garbage all over the road. We had to jump over several pieces of large building remains on the sidewalk. All of the buildings were a charcoal black and gray as well.
Zayjay darted down a large and dark allyeway. I was right on her heels. I stopped in my tracks as soon as I saw him.
Oliver was crouched down on the ground in a little ball. Crying. "Marco...Marco...Marco..." He whimpered.
"Polo." I grunted.
He slowly lifted his head. Tears were smeared across his face and his eyes were wide with fear.
Zayjay walked over to him.
"What happened?" She asked flatly.Oliver didn't answer at first, just whimpering and fumbling with his words.
"C'mon!" Zayjay snapped.
At that moment, D'Anna jumped down from one of the buildings. She stood up straight.
"A rouge animal almost got us." She informed.
"This one" she gestured at Oliver with her knife "started screaming and crying, which made the animal more upset. I cased it away." She showed no emotion what so ever."What kind of animal was it?" I questioned.
D'Anna tensed a second before looking straight at me. "It was a um...dog."
"So...you handled the animal perfectly fine?"
D'Anna nodded a yes to my question.
"Then why was Oliver freaking out so much. If you could have handled to dog and he was safe, then why did he-"
D'Anna cut me off.
"Listen Brooke, there was a cat that attacked us, Oliver got scared, I chased it away, end of story."I frowned, losing my patients. "You said it was a dog."
D'Anna looked at the ground, clearly enraged.
"T-that's what I said."I looked at her questionably. Why was she being so hesitant and weird. Whatever it was it was bothering me. I didn't like how she was acting suspicious.
D'Anna hurried out of the alleyway, Zayjay right behind her. They turned a corner so that they couldn't be seen anymore.
I stared down at Oliver. He was gazing out at the road. No emotions could be read on his face.
"Did a dog really attack you two?"
I had to ask, but I didn't get a response.
He simply looked up at me. He got to his feet and walked out of the alleyway.I followed him.
I thought of Zayjay's reaction to the mirror and tensed. I rested my hand on the cut I had on my shoulder. Hoping that I wouldn't get more anytime soon.
