Spoiler Alert for the new book Wings of Fire Legends!
Indigo remembered the mass murder that occurred a few years ago. An animus had gone crazy and almost everyone was killed. It left all Seawings depressed as they tried to mourn their fallen relatives. Fallen ruler. Fallen friends.
That was one of the last times Indigo had seen her best friend who she promised never to stop being friends with him. They had both escaped from Albatross together and hid but he soon found them telling Fathom that he killed his entire family. Indigo had jumped into action trying to give time for Fathom to escape but he instead helped Indigo end Albatross and his rampage. Fathom told a spear to kill his grandfather and that's just what happened since animus magic never fails.
After that, they had found Fathom's sister who ended up becoming queen. Indigo then thought that everything was going to get better but secretly without her, Queen Pearl spoke to Fathom telling him he can't be around her anymore and that he can never use his magic again. Fathom agreed and left to a place Indigo didn't know about so she wouldn't try reuniting with him again.
Indigo was crushed and when Queen Pearl came to tell her, she said that Fathom wanted to do this and that he thought everyone would be much safer. Queen Pearl had also thought Indigo killed Albatross (which wasn't true) and she promoted Indigo as top guard and she was honored throughout the Seawing kingdom. Indigo, with nothing else to do and no one to ask for help, started her training for guards which changed her personality afterwards.
Now, Indigo was standing beside her Queen with a spear ready in case of emergency. Everyone there in the thrown room was waiting for a dragon to come through. The queen told her earlier that day that she was going to have a meeting with another Seawing. Not sure I know who it is. Better keep my eye out on them. It must mean something important if the queen personally asked me to guard her.
Indigo looked around her at the other guards. They looked more ready for danger than what Indigo looked like and she tried to make herself stand taller and look bigger. She had only been a guard for awhile and she knew she wasn't the best should could be. Indigo always harshly corrected herself saying she would never be able to protect anyone. She'd pinch herself and keep going with whatever she was doing. For instance, watching and waiting for a Seawing to come through the big doors.
"Surf, bring Current out here," Queen Pearl commanded to one of the guards. He nodded and walked over to another door by her thrown as he led Current out in front of her. Indigo watched as Current shivered all over and tried not to make eye-contact with anyone else.
Indigo remembered him. He was someone at the massacre who was lucky enough to escape. The queen also talked to Indigo about him when she recovered him from the Nightwings where he swam all the way to. Indigo tried to remember more about him until the big doors at the front of the thrown room opened and Indigo quickly looked down at her toes realizing who it was.
It was Fathom. It made sense. Current was Fathom's cousin who went missing for awhile. Queen Pearl was probably telling Fathom that one of his relatives was alive.
Indigo still kept watching her toes even though she was supposed to keep eye on what was happening. She just couldn't and she starting pinching herself so she would but she could not move her head up to watch. It was too hard. Instead, Indigo just listened to what was happening.
Queen Pearl explained why Current was there and Current kept saying I don't want to see him and soon got led away. Poor Fathom, it's probably because he's an animus and Current's afraid of him turning bad. Ugh Indigo, your not supposed to be wanting him back in your life. Stop now! Indigo thought and pinched herself again. It was getting harder to stop thinking about him. She got the feeling that he was watching her and that just made her want to run over and hug him like she used to do.
