Adeline

*Beep* Beep* *Beep*

My phone's alarm went off and I rolled over and put it on snooze. I had still had a few minutes before i actually needed to get up.

*BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*

AMBER ALERT ON 63RD AND 5TH
*BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*

Upon the alert on my phone that was going crazy, I finally got up to turn it off. Finally checking the time on my phone, i jolted up in shock.

"11:30 am! Crap! I'm late! Ugh, there's no point in going to school now." I decided I wouldn't go considering how late I was already. I got up to go to the kitchen to make myself a bowl of cereal. I would've made pancakes since they're my favorite, but I couldn't considering the stove has been broke for weeks now. I told the landlord, and he promised he would fix it, but he never got around to it. Just like how he never got around to fixing the leak in my roof since last Christmas. But for now it's just going to be dry foods and microwaveable foods until then.

I got to the kitchen when I realized I was holding something in my happen, then it hit me that it was Emerald's sweater and that I had forgotten to return to her last night. Staring at it intently for a few minutes, I decided I would just go to the cafe for breakfast and return it then.

Returning to my bedroom, I slipped on a pair of skinny jeans, a nice black sweatshirt, and a raincoat. The rain seemed to be heavy this season, so I would actually need my raincoat this time. I grabbed my umbrella, put on my rain boots, and slipped the sweater into my bag and was on my way.

Emerald
"Order up! Two eggs sunny side up, with a side of turkey bacon burnt crispy, and a half decaf mocha coffee with two drops of caramel and two scoops of sugar. Just like you like it Johnny." I smiled at the customer sitting before me. He came in almost every morning with the same order so I already knew it by heart.

"Thanks Emerald, you never fail to surprise me." He smiled back at me with his pearly white teeth, and perfectly angular jaw line. I'd honestly have to admit he was definitely gorgeous, but he wasn't my type which is why I turned him down when he came in a couple weeks ago.

He randomly decided to visit the café one afternoon, of course he would talk to me because I'm his usually waitress. So being the polite worker I am, I smiled at him and laughed at all his jokes. That day was actually a weird day, because in the middle of our conversation the front door to the café got slammed shut, but no one saw who did. Ever since, rumors have been going around that the café is haunted, which it definitely is not. It was probably some angry customer who stormed out, but right after the door slammed he asked me out. At that moment my smile slowly started to slip but I tried my best to keep it so I could let him down gently. Which, luckily I managed to do.

"Alright Johnny, enjoy your breakfast."
"Thank you Emerald." He said this with a wink and I knew he was flirting. So I just playfully rolled my eyes and walked away.

As soon as I stepped behind the counter, I heard the jingle of the front door. Looking to see who came in, I immediately furrowed my brows with confusion.

"Adeline? What are you doing here?" I said as I walked over to her.
"Oh um," she began to fumble with her bag, "I forgot to give this back to you last night, after you walked me home."

I looked at the sweater and gave her a small smile. "Keep it Hun, it looked better on you anyway."
"No," she began to protest "I can't. I couldn't possibly take-"
I raised up my hand to cut her off. "You can and you will. End of conversation."

I smiled at her and I could see she was happy to keep it. "Thank you." She said with a small, but grateful smile.

"Why don't you take a seat and I'll get you your usual." I said motioning her towards her usual seat.
"Uh sure ok." She awkwardly agreed and sat down.

"I'll be right back." I left to go get her usual hot chocolate and banana chocolate chip muffing.
"Hey Bethany, can I take my break now?"
"Sure hun, you got 30 minutes." She replied as quick as I asked.

Moments later I returned with the hot drink and muffin sitting it in front her, and I sat in the seat in front of her.
"So Adeline, why aren't you in school?"
She took a moment to drink her hot drink then answered. "I woke up late, so I decided not to got."
"Oh ok, and how's your shoulder?" I asked with a worried tone.
"It's ok. Not as sore, so I guess that's good."
I smiled, "It is, and what did your parents say about the incident?"
Upon this question she immediately got a look a panic and began to tense up.
"Oh uh...." She trailed off as if she had to think about what she was going to say next. "They said they were going to the school today to uh address the issue."
"Wait they're going without you? How would they have proof of what happened? Were there even any witnesses?"
I began to question her too much, and I realized it sounded like an interrogation. She began to look down and and had a look of nervousness.
"Um, they took a picture of the bruise and took it to the principal." She began to push her hair behind her ear and I could tell she wasn't telling me everything. Then again, it wasn't my place to know everything so I left it at that.
