"Kaziah?.... Are you alright?"

I sat there motionless as he tried to shake me out of my trance.

"What is it something I said?"

I turned to him and smiled weakly.

"I'm just shocked... that's all"

His faced turned from worried to hurt.

"Did you really think I had the audacity to murder something so defenceless?"

"No, not at all... I just thought that you wouldn't hav-"

"What?...you don't think I have what it takes to be a father?"

"Gilber-"

"Look Kaziah, I know my life is pretty crappy and I'm not the ideal type of person to become a parent but I'm going to adjust my ways"

I grabbed his hand and squeezed it tightly.

"So your absolutely sure you want to follow through with this?"

He bent down and tenderly kissed my forehead.

"I'm sure"

We both sat there silently for ten minutes, soaking in the nights emptiness.

Gilbert closed his eyes and rested his head on top of mine.

"Gilly?"

"Hmmm?"

"My uncle doesn't know about it yet?"

"So?"

"What do you mean 'So'? You could lose your job?"

"Kaziah, when I said I'll adjust I really meant it"

" I don't understand"

"If I lose my job, I lose my job. I'll go find another one"

I looked up at him a little frustrated.

"That's too risky Gilbert. You can't guarantee yourself that you can get a job straight away. Who's going to provide for your family when y-"

"Look, I have an uncle in South Dakota who owns a car yard. We're not close but he's always looking for workers"

"So that's your plan. You're going to move your whole family to South Dakota so you can work for someone you hardly even know"

He laughed lightly.

"I'll stay with my Uncle and when I get paid I'll drive down to drop off the money"

"Who's going to look after Arnie? Aren't you the only one who really understands him?"

"My sister Ellen is more than capable of looking after my brother"

I sat there trying to come up with excuses.

"Then.....who's going to care for the child?"

He turned to me with a big smile.

"We are"

"Huh?"

"Kaziah, I'm not leaving you behind...as long as you stay with me"

His words literally knocked the air out of my lungs. My breathing started to become hollow as though I was having an asthmatic episode.

"Gilbert I don't know...my mom would have a heart attack"

"Who cares. As long as we got each other, right?"

I looked down at my fingers, contemplating between the two options.

"Gilbert...I don't know what it's like to be a mom. I don't think this path you're leading me on is the best for me"

He bent down and whispered in my ear.

"You wouldn't leave me....right?"

I looked up at him and smiled shyly.

"Never would I ever"
