I sat next to Gilbert as we waited anxiously for the doctors call.

"Mrs Carver, Doctor Melark will see you now"

I got up slowly, feeling some what afraid. Gilbert looked down at me and smiled.

"You don't have to come in if it's too much for you"

I grabbed his hand and smiled triumphantly.

"No. We're going in together. Wether I like it or not".

He kissed my forehead before leading me into the office.

"Hello there Ma'am. How are we feeling?"

The doctor greeted my Aunty with a warm smile and gestured for us to sit.

I sat down awkwardly, as a strong sense of displacement washed over me. The feeling of triumph draining from my system.

"Gilbert, I guess this is your sister?"

The doctor glanced over at me confused.

I slowly stood up, wanting to leave but Gilbert grabbed my hand before I had the chance.

"Actually doctor, she's my partner.....my girlfriend"

I looked at Gilbert surprised. That was the first time he had ever addressed me as his "girl friend".

The doctor looked at him with eyes filled with curiosity.

"B-but aren't you the father of this-"

"Doctor we all make mistakes.....please we aren't here to be judged"

My Aunty with pain evident in her eyes, gestured for me to retake my seat.

I reluctantly sat down, suddenly feeling curious as to what the doctor had to say.

"Of course....forgive me for intruding on such sensitive grounds"

Tension filled the air as we waited for the results.

The doctor walked in with a blank face. That was concerning.

"Ma'am I am going to have to talk to you...privately"

My Aunty stood up and followed the doctor into another examination room.

I looked at Gilbert nervously, expecting to be confined in assurance but instead he only mirrored my reaction.

"Is this normal? Do they always do this?"

"No...its never happened before"

My Aunty walked in with the doctor by her side.

Gilbert and I rushed to her with anticipation.

She hung her head low as if she was too weak to look up.

"Betty.......is everything okay?"

She raised her head, smiling weakly before replying.

"It's a girl"

Gilbert's faced instantly lit up with joy.

He got onto his knees and kissed her stomach before whispering 'Daddy's little girl'.

I looked up at my Aunty who now seemed pale and faint.

"Aunty?"

She gingerly looked up before collapsing into the doctors arms.

"Aunty!"

I shrieked horrified. What the hell happened to her.

They laid her down to rest on one of the portable stretchers.

I sat down next to her feeling guilty. I knew I shouldn't have but I couldn't help myself.

The doctor walked in with two coffees. I took it gratefully. Gilbert on the other hand looked annoyed and refused the doctors kind gesture.

"Why won't you tell us? As the father of the child, don't I hold any authority?"

The pain and frustration was evident in his voice as he tried to persuade the doctor.

"I don't think it appropriate Gilbert that I indulge in private matters"

I looked at the him pleadingly.

"Please...."

The doctor sighed deeply before sitting down.

"After doing the ultrasound, we noticed a small bump had formed above her right ovarie....."

Gilbert who was by this point at the end of this chair pleaded the doctor to go on.

"...We took a closer and discovered it was a tumour"

The colour from Gilbert's face drained as the news settled in.

"W-what does this mean?"

"We must operate on her as soon as possible before it spreads"

I sat there fixated on my Aunty.

"What happens if it spreads?"

"Your Aunty would lose the ability to have children and....it could claim her life"

I sat there feeling uneasy as pictures of my little cousins flooded into my mind.

"And the child?"

"Waiting for the delivery of the child is much too dangerous. It doesn't take long for cancer to spread"

Gilbert stood up.

"You didn't answer her question"

The doctor raised his hands into the air.

"Please Gilbert.I don't want trouble"

Gilbert sat down a little embarrassed by his intimidation.

"The child's fate is....uncertain due to the size of the tumour. Operating on a heavily pregnant mother is dangerous. The outcome is unpredictable. 97.4% of expectant mothers who suffer from the same illness as Betty......lose their child due to pregnancy complications"

"So what are you saying?"

"Haven't I made myself clear to you? ...It's either the child or the mother"
